Come bring your ASCP Clinical Lab Scientist (CLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) license and passion for blood banking to support the life-saving mission of the American Red Cross Blood Services.

We are looking for a full time Medical Technologist to work in our W. HENRIETTA, NY reference lab performing specialized testing to serve our local hospital clients. Available schedule is on Third Shift Monday-Friday.

As a Medical Technologist at the Red Cross you will perform basic and advanced donor and patient tests, and interpret results to determine donor-recipient compatibility. Primary job responsibilities may include:

  • Resolving compatibility problems

  • Providing complex reference and consultation services to hospitals and transfusion services

  • Performing automated and manual test procedures on blood samples

Other Medical Technologist duties may include:

  • Managing receipt, coordination, shipment and transport of patient and donor blood samples and documenting supply and equipment problems

  • Managing reagent inventory (ordering, receiving, inspection and preparation)

  • Recognizing/resolving testing irregularities and assisting other Medical Technologists in problem resolution.

  • Consulting with staff at other medical facilities, to resolve complex serologic problems and providing special units to transfusion recipients

  • Performing maintenance, repair and validation of laboratory equipment and software

  • Maintaining accurate records

  • Performing manufacturing duties associated with special blood products, if applicable

  • Assuming lead responsibilities such as record review and training; assisting in concern management

Qualifications:

  • Technologist I: BS in Biological Science or Chemistry with ASCP (MT/MLS/CLS or BB) OR ASCP MLT with 4 years of general lab experience.

  • Technologist II: BS in Biological Science or Chemistry with ASCP (MT/MLS/CLS or BB) and 3 years blood bank experience OR ASCP MLT with 5 years blood bank experience.

  • Experience/Skills:
    Good written and verbal skills to communicate effectively with internal and external customers. Must be able to work on a team. Ability to use a wide variety of lab or medical equipment. Ability to use a personal computer and applicable software for sustained periods of time.

  • Schedule: Must be available for daytime training during first 6-9 months on the job. After training, schedule will be on 2nd shift or 3rd shift.

  • Physical requirements: Available to work overtime, other shifts, early mornings, evenings, holidays and weekends. Requires standing, stretching, stooping and bending for extended time periods. Lift, pull, push and move objects of up to 50 pounds. May work in walk-in refrigerator/freezers for periods of time. Work under pressure and within time standards. Required to wear protective clothing such as lab coats, gloves, face shields, etc. when there is exposure to blood and blood products and/or where work location requires.

  • State Licensure: NY State license or limited license for clinical laboratory technologist required.

Must be willing and able to answer technical customer service calls, execute custom-order specimens, willing and able to QC all biology specimens made by their team, willing and able to train new techs in all aspects of team production of specimens, motivated and able to effectively keep team functioning in supervisors absence - including having the respect of the entire team. MAJOR JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (List in order of importance) * Perform all of the production duties of a tech on your team with consistently superior quality and speed so additional duties do not drop production metrics below minimum standards. * Conduct quality control for the entire line of specimens that the team makes and prepare raw materials independently and share these duties with supervisor. * Participation in interdepartmental technical projects. * Provides technical customer service in area of team expertise including hand selection and advice on technical issues to customers - both internal and external. * Conducts and/or participates in long-term trouble-shooting/opportunity projects such as lean and six-sigma improvement projects and specimen product development. * Assist supervisors in training of new technicians. * Collect and input data to produce any special project productivity reports for team. * Supports departmental functioning by requesting supplies from supervisor, using company computer system to monitor team backorders and enter data, monitoring safety compliance. * Conducts occasional team lab meetings. * Participation in regulatory issues -licenses and collecting data for compliance (ex. Chemical inventory, Fish and Wildlife, Disposal of hazardous waste, Universal Precautions, Spill team member, safety committee service, etc.) * Performs other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS (Education/Training, Experience and Certifications) * Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Earth Science, Environmental Science, or other related degree or equivalent experience * Basic Math skills to effectively manage productivity data and make correct calculations for preparation of special chemicals * Technical laboratory experience of more than 3 years * Experience working safely with hazardous materials KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES (Those necessary to perform the job competently) * Leadership Ability including: Serve as a role model for the Technicians and demand excellence from the team - Ability to elicit cooperative behavior from the team Focus on beating the competition * Knowledge of general laboratory safety and hazardous chemicals - to be able to monitor safety practices of lab members and participate in recycling of hazardous chemicals - partially acquired in college courses, most directly in company safety training class, partially on the job. * Ability to train technicians with scientific background to produce quality products according to the needs of our customers (usually high school and college teachers) - partially acquired in college courses, partially on the job experience. * Ability to independently plan and organize time of self and others and prioritize appropriately - to be able to meet laboratory production goals and reporting requirements in a timely manner will need to multi-task if needed and work on projects in addition to routine work (product development, kit testing, written evaluations) * Requires good written and verbal communication skills including the ability to write SOPs, provide constructive criticism to coworkers, handle customers and vendors directly when needed - both on the phone and through presentation skills * Ability to work effectively on cross-functional teams - so that the company can leverage scientific and technical knowledge efficiently. * Skill to organize and analyze data - so that it can be interpreted usefully to inform decision making processes of self or others - partially acquired in college courses, partially in analytical jobs, partially native ability. * Knowledge of the customer's wants and needs - * Knowledge of teaching requirements for quality in specimens * Knowledge to answer technical questions from customers - typically High School and College teachers so that those needs can be met to benefit the company bottom line - usually acquired on the job or with prior job experience as a customer.
