This class is accountable for providing laboratory testing services to the hospital and community, primarily in the areas of chemistry, hematology, urinalysis and coagulation. This position will work primarily in the Blood Bank and Core Lab within Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the UConn John Dempsey Hospital located in Farmington, CT.

Receives direction from the Blood Bank Supervisor, Chief Technologist, Laboratory Director or Manager, Blood Bank Division Director or Department Head.
May exercise technical and functional supervision over technical and administrative support staff.
Full time 40 hours per week, primarily 2nd shift, Monday - Friday, 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., rotating weekends and holidays as required, may work 1st and 3rd shift to accommodate departmental needs per contract, 30-minute unpaid meal break, may be required to stay at or return to work during public health incidents and/or emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or to perform other duties as required in an assigned response position.This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or work outside the normal assigned duties during an incident and/or emergency.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND TECHNICAL SKILLS:
Accepts and promptly prepares patient specimens in order to perform and analyze in an efficient manner, basic diagnostic procedures (e.g., electrolyte, gram stains, blood cell counts, urinalysis, bleeding times, compatibility testing, etc.) designed to produce accurate reproducible results to meet the needs of patients, as requested by the medical staff.
Follows standard operating procedures (SOP) developed to produce accurate reproducible results.
Utilize automated systems, e.g. Immucor Solid Phase technology to perform patient testing.
Use EPIC/Beaker, Softbank and other computer based systems to charge, process, and report patient results.
Must have the ability to trouble shoot patient demographic and order entry in these systems.
Troubleshoot system problems with interfaces and reporting issues.
Perform full range of immunohematological testing as required.
Process specimens for ABO grouping and Rh typing.
Identify irregular antibodies as necessary.
Perform antigen typing and other tests on patients' specimens and blood products.
Perform cross-matching and prepares blood products for issue to patients.
Perform Sickle or other tests on blood products and patients.
Operate sterile connection devices as necessary.
Prepare syringe aliquots for neonates as necessary.
Maintain neat and accurate records of all work done and all products received into or dispensed from the Blood Bank.
Notify supervisor and/or personnel of higher grade of significant and critical test results or abnormal findings in a timely manner.
Interpret and reports test results.
Maintain patient confidentiality.
Participate in training as required.
Perform the processing of reference laboratory specimens including creating manifest and packaging in accordance with DOT/ IATA protocols.
Will be cross trained in some assignments in other divisions (Core Lab and Microbiology).
Integrates instrument data, quality control and test principles for accurate result reporting.
Perform procedures for quality control and quality assurance of all laboratory analyses.
Keep records, prepare and update written reports and procedure manuals.
May assist in research, planning and evaluation of alternative methods and or instrumentation.
Review and follow current literature to maintain state-ofthe-art methodology and technologies for transfusion medicine related testing.
Participate in the quality assurance program.
Perform other related duties as required.
Maintains effective communication with laboratory divisions and sections, other hospital departments, patients and the public to ensure dissemination of information and the identification/resolution of problems in support of the hospital's mission of patient care.
Promptly and courteously answers telephone inquiries, communicates laboratory test results timely and efficiently to the health care team.
Communicates all appropriate information to patients for their understanding, before, during and after designated procedure(s).
Communicate any unusual supply usage or critical supply levels in a timely manner to the supervisor to expedite ordering of required supplies for the continual service needs of patients.
Participates in the educational endeavors of the Institution to meet the current and future needs of the hospital, laboratory and the University in support of the mission of patient care, teaching and research.
Performs required quality assurance and quality control procedures on a predetermined schedule to ascertain the reliability of reagents and laboratory equipment/instrumentation in order to assure timely accurate reproducible test results insuring quality patient care.
Performs routine maintenance, calibrations and quality control of laboratory equipment/instrumentation as directed by the laboratory SOP within the predetermined time schedule, recognizing errors, responding in an appropriate manner and documenting completion.
Recognizes basic instrument malfunctions and performs minor troubleshooting and aids in appropriate problem resolution, in a timely manner.
Reports test results manually or via computer with limited errors as defined by laboratory section.
Participates, as required, in proficiency testing/interpretation/reporting using established procedures.
Perform related duties as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITY:
Knowledge of the practice and principles of basic laboratory operations, techniques and procedures utilized in the various divisions of the clinical laboratory; laboratory instrumentation including computers; scientific methods; safety procedures relating to a laboratory to include handling of highly infectious biological agents as well as potentially hazardous chemicals
Knowledge of relevant agency (internal and external) policies and procedures
Knowledge of operational characteristics of apparatus, equipment and materials used in a laboratory
Interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills

EXPERIENCE & TRAINING:
Medical Technologist 1: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biology or related field with rotation through an approved Blood Bank Training program. Must be eligible for and/or taken the ASCP exam; must be certified within six (6) months of graduation.
Medical Technologist 2: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biology or related field with rotation through an approved Blood Bank training program and two (2) years of Medical Technology experience in the area of immunohematology (i.e. Transfusion Services/Blood Bank). Experience should include a broad knowledge of the technical aspects of the tests performed in the blood bank (including automated instrumentation, inventory control of blood products, regulatory aspects of blood banking and other manual procedures).
SPECIAL REQUIRED CERTIFICATION:
Med Tech 2- Must have current ASCP or NRM certification as a Medical Technologist OR ability to obtain certification within six (6) months of employment.
SUBSTITUTION ALLOWED FOR BACHELOR DEGREE:
(Med Tech 2): Accreditation as a Technologist in the related specialty from the Board of Registry (ASCP) in MT/MLS. If Medical Technologist Certification was received after 01/01/2004, Certification Maintenance Program (CMP) points to retain certification are required.
Incumbents in this class will be given a visual color sampling.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Incumbents in this class are exposed to disagreeable odors, infectious materials, radioactive, toxic and other hazardous substances.
Work requires visual strain due to prolonged/extended close examination of specimens and use of a microscope (light or fluorescent).
Prolonged periods of standing, sitting and walking.
Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
Ability to bend and reach in order to operate instrumentation.
