Summary

You will serve as a MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (VARIOUS SPECIALTIES) in the Department of Navy, Naval Medical Command.

This announcement uses the Direct Hire Authority for Certain Personnel of the Department of Defense to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out procedures in urinalysis, serology, chemistry, hematology, coagulation, microbiology, shipping and specimen collection of blood, urine, and other body fluid.

  • Perform phlebotomy and other specimen collection procedures and, on a rotational basis, is required to run the front desk of the laboratory.

  • Respond to the patient call bell in a timely manner, accessing CHCS to order or retrieve patient lab requests, performing phlebotomy, and giving patients any patient data in regards to specimen collection.

  • Complete general clerk related activities in support of laboratory departmental requirements. Sets up and monitors record-keeping systems and effective quality control procedures.

  • Train and provide orientation in phlebotomy and other specimen collection procedures and maintains data in automated systems.

Qualifications

This position has a SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR needed in order to qualify.

  • Current and active Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), Registered Medical Assistant certification (RMA) from the American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Certified Medical Assistant certification (NCMA) from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) or certification from the Armed Forces of the United States trained medical assistants who have completed medical service training that provides clinical proficiency in these necessary scope of knowledge and clinical skills.

Failure to possess the SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR WILL result in an ineligible rating; the factor(s) must be verifiable with submission of a copy of the certification with your application.

Performing gram stain analysis of various fluids obtained from patients. (b) Chemistry: Performing various chemical examinations for testing chemical components in blood, urine, plasma, serum and other body fluids, determining qualitative and quantitative chemistry; Preparing standardized reagents used for chemical procedures; calibrates and maintains laboratory instruments such as; Kodak DT 60, Coleman spectrophotometer and centrifuges. (c) Serology: Performing serological tests and procedures for detection of the presence of specific antibodies in blood. (d) Hematology/Urinalysis: Performing hematological procedures on whole blood, semen and urine. Performs manual differentials and cellular counts. For the GS-04 - Successful completion of (a) an associate-degree course of study of which the 2nd year of the 2-year program included successful completion of a training course of approximately a year's duration in a certified laboratory assistant school approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency; (b) 1 year of study that included 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or the biological sciences, plus successful completion of the training course as described in (a) above for GS-3; or (c) 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours of chemistry and/or biological science course work that must have been directly related to the specialization of the position to be filled. For the GS-05 - Successful completion of four-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. (Your transcripts must be attached.)
