Medical Technician I - Houston, TX req15371

Schedule: Monday

  • Friday 10:00 pm

  • 06:30 am OR Tuesday-Saturday 12:00 mn/1:00 am

  • 8:30/9:30 am. (Starting times/days will vary depending on what area of the department the technologist is scheduled for.)

Basic Purpose:

Performs routine lab tests under the guidance of Medical Technologists and Laboratory Supervisor. Sets up and monitors automated test procedures. Performs manual procedures requiring judgment. Uses pre-calibrated and/or automated devices.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test

analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test result;

  • Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens;

  • Analyze specimens using approved testing procedures (see department SOPs).

  • Review and release test results.

  • Follow CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and safety guidelines as described in their respective guidelines.

  • Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and all maintenance


  • Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.

  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results, correct the problems encountered or immediately notify the senior

technologist or supervisor.

  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.

  • Follow department's procedure in reporting critical results to


  • If applicable, answer questions from customers or other lab personnel.

  • Maintain complete records of all testing performed on-site.

  • Maintain general appearance of the department.

  • Make sure reagents/test kits have received dates, expiration dates, and if applicable opened dates.

  • Review/train on new procedures.

  • Attend monthly department and any additional training/educational meetings.

  • Participate in all applicable safety training sessions. Know the location and

contents of the safety manual. Know the location/use of all applicable safety equipment.

  • May perform some moderate-complexity testing with specific on-site training


  • Perform other duties as directed by supervisor.

Supervision Exercised:


Education Preferred: BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology, or Associates degree in a Laboratory Science or Medical Technology, or

Work Experience: 1 - 3 year Clinical experience preferred.

Other: Must have the ability to establish work priorities and handle several procedures simultaneously.

Must interact with other departments.

Contact with clients may be required, good customer service skills important.

Must protect patient confidentiality at all times.

The Medical Equipment Technician performs operational verification, preventive maintenance, corrective repair service, and completes all associated documentation and communication in a timely manner. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Able to dialogue with clinical staff on the topics of equipment features, functionality, etc. * Understands and uses effective conflict resolution skills, e.g., identifies and resolves service concerns, discrepancies and disagreements. * Ensures prompt and courteous service is delivered to all customers in person and in all communications. * Provides cost effective equipment inspection, maintenance, calibration and repair service on general biomedical equipment. * Delivers a quality service and meets productivity objectives and targets. * Shares information with all team members to improve ability to service customers and define opportunities for the district team. * Completes all paperwork accurately and in a timely manner to ensure accurate documentation for billing and required regulatory compliance. * Inspects, cleans and tests general biomedical equipment for functionality, following approved written procedures. * Safely loads, secures and delivers medical equipment to customers. * Ships and receives medical equipment and supplies. * Assists with inventory management. * Resolves customer complaints, ensuring customer satisfaction. * Assists in patient handling equipment training as needed. * Performs other assigned duties. REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES * Able to read, analyze and interpret technical literature, schematics and technical drawings. * Proficient computer skills in MS Office Suite. * Willing to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays, as well as emergency off-hours as required. * Valid driver's license and potential for DOT certification. * Able to lift and/or push 75 pounds. * Able to stand and walk for extended periods of time. * Possesses quality orientation with a "get it right the first time" attitude. * Complies with patient privacy laws in all matters. * Maintains and projects confidence, enthusiasm and a professional image. * Demonstrates effective communication skills (listening, writing and speaking). * Demonstrates team orientation and shows respect for others. * Proactive and self-motivated. * Organized; prioritizes to meet deadlines. * Operates with a proactive approach towards safety, health and quality in compliance with all company, governmental, and customer policies and regulations. * Customer-focused: willing to go above and beyond.
