Duties
Interacts with hospital personnel to correct discrepancies such as notifying nursing/medical staff if there is concern about a drawing site, patient is combative, or any other possible contraindications.
Recognizes emergency situations and takes necessary action; establishes priorities for emergency orders.
Verifies patient as the individual denoted on the request and labels all tubes with the patient's name, social security number, date, and time, to ensure proper identification.
Performs blood-drawing and other specimen collecting duties as assigned in a courteous and professional manner; makes the patient feel as comfortable as possible.
Performs standard diagnostic tests or procedures such as venipuncture and finger stick to collect blood specimens according to written protocols as as directed by the physician or other professional staff.
Adheres to safety, infection control and universal precautions at all times, including before, during and after site preparation, giving patient proper instructions for Federal Drug Screening, removing tourniquets, wearing gloves, following all isolation procedures while drawing patients.
Builds manifest for Send Out testing and gathers, aliquots, labels, and packages specimens for courier pickup.
Answers incoming calls for Laboratory Services; quickly finds and relays accurate information or refers the caller to appropriate technical personnel.
Performs disposition of add-on orders; able to independently assess workflow and appropriately triage workload.
Maintain files of computer and manually printed order entry forms.
Independently contacts ordering provides for clarification to ensure the correct test is performed.
Orders and distributes supplies to laboratory departments and CBOC, i.e., Broward Clinic.
Other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm; Required to work weekends and holidays on a fair and equitable rotation basis.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/01/2024.

Physical Requirements: The physical demands are primarily standing and walking, but also some bending, lifting, and carrying of light items. Also, there are times of considerable exertion with patient positioning to do inpatient blood draws (50 pounds or more). The work requires above average agility and dexterity. The work environment involves regular and recurrent exposure to moderate risks or discomforts typically associated with performing phlebotomy on patients (as well as specimen handling), requiring special safety precautions.
