Employee will be assigned to the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Providence, Rhode Island. Duties include but may not be limited to the following:


DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.

Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Receives all requests for testing into the laboratory, verifying the accuracy and completeness of the request;

Enters all requests into a hospital computer system using multiple formats;

Processes all specimens according to strict guidelines to assure each specimen is handled properly;

Uses and performs maintenance on laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, refrigerators, and freezers;

Performs all aspects of sample storage, packaging, and other requirements regarding the shipment of diagnostic specimens and infectious substances;

Verifies patient as individual denoted on the request and labels all tubes accordingly ensuring proper identification;

Performs blood drawing duties and special drawing procedures, in a courteous and professional manner;

Instructs patients in proper technique for sterile urine collection, 24 hour urine collection, and collection of specimens for culture and sensitivity, ova and parasites, and occult blood;

Assists in teaching laboratory and medical center personnel theoretical and practical aspects of phlebotomy, specimen collection, and specimen requirements;

Performs clerical duties to include answering incoming calls for Laboratory Services, and maintaining files of computer and manually printed order entry forms;The position performs other duties as assigned.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess at least one year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this Medical Technician position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience includes: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic, and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled; experience performing duties such as phlebotomy, accessioning and processing, chemistry, coagulation, urinalysis, and microbiology. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (Transcript required): Successful completion of a full 4 - year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. Transcripts must be submitted with application. Education cannot be credited without documentation.
COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (Transcript Required): Equivalent combination of successfully completed post-high school education in subjects directly related to the position, and specialized experience which meets the total experience requirements for this position at the GS-5 grade level. Physical Requirements:
The work requires extensive and recurring physical exertion such as standing for long periods of time, bending, standing, lifting, walking, stooping, and stretching.

The work requires duty on weekends, holidays, and nights when so assigned. The work involves regular and recurring risks or discomforts associated with working in a clinical laboratory, e.g., working with infectious substances, contagious diseases, and irritant reagents. The technician wears protective clothing such as lab coats, goggles or face shields and gloves.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.

VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.

This position is also responsible for providing support to the laboratory, physician and/or medical office with specific daily duties.
