HSHS requires COVID-19 vaccines or an approved medical or religious exemption for all colleagues. Paid Student Nurse Externship at St. Mary’s Hospital Our student nurse extern program provides the opportunity to gain supervised, hands-on working experience while still in nursing school.

Nurse externs gain valuable experience to help them prepare for careers as members of the medical community tasked with providing high-quality care to patients. Candidate MUST successfully completed at least one medical-surgical clinical rotation before Nurse Extern I offer can be extended. Nurse Extern I’s Performs or assists with patient care utilizing the nursing process under the supervision of a registered nurse preceptor.

Provides care for patients of all ages according to the standards of care specific to the individual's needs.
