Under the University of Washington Medical Center Social Work Department's Policies and Professional Social Work requirements, this Social Work Professional serves as a member of the UWMC Emergency Medicine Service (EMS) health care team, providing direct services to EMS patients and their support systems, and providing consultation to medical staff regarding psychosocial issues, and for responding to inpatient social work emergencies after hours.

The University of Washington Medical Center's Emergency Medicine Services has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time (24 hours/week), night shift, MEDICAL SOCIAL WORKER 1 or 2. This position reports to the Emergency Room Social Work Manager. This social work professional will demonstrate the knowledge and skills to provide care and/or services appropriate to the age of the patient in the service area.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Consult with medical and nursing staff in order to screen patients for service needs, provide information regarding social work activity and to coordinate care as a part of an interdisciplinary team.

Conduct independent psychosocial assessments and psychiatric evaluations, facilitating psychiatric admissions at UWMC, other hospitals or via involuntary treatment services, as appropriate.

Provide consultation with other UWMC Social Work Department team members.

Provide telephone consultation and crisis intervention for persons calling in from community.

Provide thorough documentation of clinical activity via medical record for continuity of care and legal issues.

Psychosocial and physical needs assessment of medically ill EMS patients.

Arrange visiting nurse or chore services as needed.

Alert inpatient social worker of patients admitted needing discharge planning.

Substance abuse assessments and treatment referrals.

Domestic violence assessments, referrals to safe houses and community resources.

Liaison between medical staff and family of EMS patients in medical crisis information, support, grief work as needed.

Function as patient advocate in EMS; provide information, support basic comfort measures; help clarify patient needs to medical staff.

Participate as an active member of a Clinical Social Work Team contributing to the successful functioning of the Social Work Team and Department Submit statistics on daily activity.

Social Worker 2

Provides training to new staff and students and represents the department and UWMC to internal and external groups.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

Social Worker 1

A Master of Social Work Degree from a program accredited by the Council of Social Work Education AND six months of experience in a health care delivery system.

OR

Equivalent education/experience.

Health care experience can include a practicum placement as part of a social work training program and/or employment experience.

Social Worker 2

A Master of Social Work Degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education AND two years of full-time professional social work experience in a health-care setting eligible to begin social work practicum instruction for the School of Social Work.

OR

Equivalent education/experience

Licensed Social Work Associate

The HUC coordinates clinical testing requirements by coordinating care with ancillary departments. The HUC is essential for maximizing efficient patient flow within the department. The HUC reports to the manager of the ED/UC. Essential Responsibilities: Coordinates patient care by monitoring, coordinating and communicating patient care orders. Monitors Track board for new orders, coordinates completion of orders with radiology, laboratory, specialty and other departments. Notifies appropriate departments of new orders. Monitors and assures all new orders are completed, coordinates radiology tests and blood draws, places referrals and acknowledges orders when completed.
