This is a universal job description meant to capture some of the primary duties of this role that are common across functions or divisions. The Medical Science Liaison will serve as a liaison to the medical/scientific community and will be responsible for establishing, developing, and maintaining relationships with experts in the Respiratory therapeutic area within the specified geographic area of coverage.

This position will cover South Texas. Preferred location is Austin, Houston or San Antonio, TX.

Your responsibilities:

  • The MSL will ensure the appropriate dissemination of clinical and scientific information regarding marketed and pipeline compounds in a timely, ethical and customer-focused manner.

  • The MSL will implement clinical and educational strategies in collaboration with other Novartis colleagues for designated customers that include potential clinical trial site placement and sponsorships.

  • The MSL will work to pair our key customer's educational and research needs with available Novartis resources and will provide the latest emerging data in response to specific healthcare professional inquiries.

Position will be filled at level commensurate with experience.

Terminal degree (MD, PhD or PharmD) or equivalent experience is preferred. (MSL, Manager: 0-3 years' experience; MSL, Associate Director: 3+ years' experience; MSL Director: 7= years' experience)

  • Field Medical position within the pharmaceutical industry is preferred. Previous experience in assigned or related therapeutic area is strongly preferred.

  • Strong clinical knowledge including pharmacotherapy, treatment guidelines, clinical research processes, medical expert engagement strategies, and FDA promotional guidelines, regulations, and ethical guidelines applied to the pharmaceutical industry is required

  • Strong interpersonal communication and presentation skills are required

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and manage time efficiently.

The field based "Medical Science Liaison" is responsible for supporting the safe and effective use of organization's interventional therapies communicating complex medical and scientific information to healthcare professionals and communicating field medical intelligence/insights to internal stakeholders. The MSL has internal and external training responsible for all Interventional therapies. The MSL has an assigned territory autonomously managing, developing and growing medical activities/initiatives achieving key medical objectives. PRINCIPLE ROLE and RESPONSIBILITIES * Therapy Training to guide the safe and effective use of IO therapies * Proactively engage HCPs providing on-label product, procedural and disease state training of interventional therapies. * Provide training/education for patient specific cases including patient section criteria, dosing, device setup/deployment and methods to mitigate adverse events. This includes real time patient case procedural training. * As a subject matter expert, teach medical education and internal training courses. Provide product and disease-state educational/training support to the Commercial and R&D functions related to technical, medical and scientific information. * Provide refresher training to users who are not achieving desired outcomes * Provide scientific/Medical data support for marketed and developmental projects in the assigned therapeutic area and assigned geographic territories to the appropriate corresponding Health Care Providers (HCP). * Conduct oneself in a non-promotional manner, respond appropriately to unsolicited inquires, facilitate research-oriented requests (both company sponsored and investigator initiated requests) and act as a scientific resource for Health Care Providers. * Act in accordance with applicable organizational values, and compliance, legal and regulatory requirements and code of conduct (Standard Operating Procedures-SOP). * Proactively ensure collaboration and alignment with cross-functional teams such as global market access and marketing departments in order to optimize the medical component during strategic and tactical planning and execution. * Respond in a timely manner with accurate and approved information to unsolicited ad hoc field based requests (including MIRs-Medical Information Requests). * Assist in evaluation of available scientific literature in relation to product development, potential clinical studies and new product concepts. Prepare strategic platforms based on current literature and level of evidence. * Design, develop, and deliver scientific presentations to individuals and groups of strategic importance to the Business Unit / Payer as requested. * Attend assigned medical and scientific meetings (congresses) and symposia to: a) maintain awareness of current issues and new data pertaining to assigned products; b) to communicate scientific information; and c) provide insight relevant to current and potential development activities. * Perform regular field activity input into Customer Relationship Management software by deadlines, provide monthly report on key scientific support activities and complete project tasks in a timely manner as assigned. * Provide monthly report on scientific support activities in the region including but not limited to field activity, key scientific support activities, maintenance of opinion leader database, project tasks and budget expenditures as directed. * Ensure that all activities and interactions are carried out with the highest ethical and professional standards and that all work is accomplished with quality and in accordance with organizational values. Medical Support: * Build, maintain and manage effective professional peer-peer relationships with contracted External Experts (EE), or Key Opinion Leaders (KOL) engaging in bi-directional scientific/educational exchange. Focus on ongoing research, newly published evidence, practice pattern changes and alternative therapies. * Teach the clinical evidence story linking the totality of evidence in a non-biased manner. Research Support: * Assist Clinical Development department with company sponsored clinical trials focusing on clinical trial site identification, site initiation, site protocol education, and ongoing support. Identify key issues that are accelerating or inhibiting patient recruitment, quality data collection or patient retention. Recommend research sites that can perform well delivering patient enrollment and quality data. Support principal investigator and provide up to date information that may improve patient recruitment and/or data quality. Provide medical insights and updates on key findings affecting the study performance. * Through scientific exchange, discover novel investigator-initiated research (IIS) ideas. Clearly articulate organization's strategic interest and fully understand how a concept fits within the strategy. Fully appreciate novel ideas that could significantly impact patient care. Support Investigator Initiated research/study program by discovering and championing innovative ideas, facilitate study start up and provide ongoing consultation.
