Full Time, Monday- Friday, Day Shift (8:30 a.m. 5 p.m.)

Position Summary:
This position assists the Health Information Technician/Practitioner and/or Nursing Department with clerical responsibilities.

Education: High school graduate or equivalent.

Experience: Previous experience working as a Medical Coder preferred

Licensure/Certification: Certified Coder Certification preferred

GENERAL PURPOSE

This position assists the Health Information Technician/Practitioner and/or Nursing Department with clerical responsibilities.

RESPONSIBLE TO:

Health Information Technician/ Practitioner

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school graduate or equivalent

  • Previous experience working as a Medical Coder or a graduate of a Certified Coder preferred.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with the medical staff and allied health partners.

  • Ability to follow established procedures and to suggest changes for smoother operations.

  • Personal attributes to include neatness, accuracy, and attention to detail.

  • Pleasant and cooperative.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to read, write, hear and communicate adequately to complete job duties and responsibilities

  • Ability to move throughout center without assistance

  • Must be able to see adequately enough to read hand written medical records

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Are determined by the center and may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Upon admission and periodically (not less than monthly), quantitatively analyze the medical records to assure completeness, accuracy, and internal consistency while the patient is in the center.

  • Prepare and assemble the medical record on admission, prepare labels for charts and room, complete heading on all forms, stock necessary forms under the appropriate tabs.

  • Notify the Medical Record Practitioner upon admission and then every two weeks of any transfer data not received

  • Assist the medical staff and allied health personnel in updating the records

  • Maintain the flow of reports to the in-house medical records

  • Maintain Overflow File by removing outdated forms from the chart holder at the nursing station

  • Arrange the medical record in the proper discharge order upon dismissal of the patient

  • Forward the medical record to the Health Information Department for further processing upon dismissal of the patient

  • Assist with MDS system as instructed.

  • Answer the telephone and relay messages

  • Check to see that orders are processed properly

  • Request laboratory, x-ray and/or special tests and see that reports are received

  • Notify all departments of admissions, transfers, and/or discharges.

  • Transfer medical records, as well as overflow records, to the proper nursing station when a new patient is moved from one room to another.

  • Other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

VIEW JOBS 8/29/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-11-27T00:00 JOB POSTING Appointment Type: Fulltime Regular PURPOSE: To perform the Beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test (BeLPT) under strict biohazard and radiological safety guidelines to protect the patient, the employee, and the environment. The ORISE Beryllium Laboratory is one of only three facilities in the United States currently performing the test known as the BeLPT or the Beryllium Lymphocyte Proliferation Test. The procedures involves testing lymphocytes from beryllium exposed workers to determine whether their cells have become sensitized to beryllium. In this test, lymphocytes are separated and cultured with varying concentrations of beryllium. The cells are observed for increased metabolic activity as seen in cell division and are compared to control cells cultured without exposure to beryllium. The BeLPT results are an indicator of beryllium sensitivity and a possible indicator for Chronic Beryllium Disease (CBD). ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: * Become knowledgeable about the hazards of the laboratory and the necessary equipment and procedures to protect the patient, the employees, and the environment thru required ORAU and lab specific training. * Maintain attention and strict adherence to quality control measures required for the lab's QM/QA policies, CAP accreditation and ISO Standards. * Perform all steps of Be LPT procedure including separating lymphocytes from whole blood using density gradient, counting blood cells and inoculating cultures in micro titer plates. * Harvest cultures and count radioactivity using specialized equipment designed for 96 well micro titer plates. * Analyze statistical data to interpret LPT results and generate patient reports and data that must be managed electronically. Analysis requires strict attention to detail to correctly identify data for each LPT with an emphasis on preserving patients' confidentiality preserved and strict adherence to HIPAA. * Keep the laboratory clean, well-organized and in compliance with all safety requirements. Assist in receiving laboratory supplies and equipment and stocking supplies in the laboratory. Provide routine maintenance to equipment and instruments as assigned and as part of trouble shooting. * Must work Saturdays in rotation as needed; approximately every 7 weeks. JOB REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in medical technology, biological, chemical or physical science and 2 to 4 years of job related experience. Must have a Medical Technologist MT (ASCP) and Tennessee State License as Laboratory Professional (Medical Laboratory Technologist). Must have work experience in any section of a laboratory where clinical tests are performed, test results reported to a physician, and patient confidentiality maintained. Requires experience in interacting with patients in a dignified and professional manner and in performing phlebotomies with a minimum of trauma. A background in computer skills (including Word and Excel) is needed for learning the specific programs to be applied to the LPT. Must be licensed by the State of Tennessee as a laboratory professional to analyze and sign laboratory results. A working knowledge of cell biology, immunology and hematology is required. Good manual dexterity and visual acuity are necessary. Knowledge and implementation of blood-borne pathogen and radiological safety rules and regulations and sterile techniques are essential. A working knowledge of computers, experimental methods, data processing and analyzing, and statistical methods is necessary. Understanding and participation in previous CAP and ISO re accreditation process preferred. Ability and required training to perform phlebotomies is preferred.
