The primary purpose of this position is to have a well-established medical record procedures, rules, processes, policies, and directives, including JCAHO standards, covering the principles of establishing, coding, maintaining, and disposition of patient records sufficient to analyze medical records, perform quality review, compile statistical data for reports, and release of information.

GS-04: One (1) year of general experience that includes knowledge of standardized medical records procedures, methods, and requirements covering the establishment, coding, maintenance and disposition of patient records sufficient to code diagnostic and operative/procedural information.
GS-05: One (1) year of specialized experience to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal system that includes knowledge of an extensive body of well-established medical records procedures, rules, processes, policies, and directives, including JCAHO standards, covering the principles of establishing, coding, maintaining, and disposition of patient records sufficient to analyze medical records, perform quality review, compile statistical data for reports, and release of information.
GS-06: One (1) year of specialized experience to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal system that includes knowledge of an extensive body of rules, JCAHO requirements, procedures and operations covering a variety of well-established processes, policies, and directives covering the establishment, coding, quality assurance, maintenance of special registries, release, and disposition of patient records.
GS-07: One (1) year of specialized experience to at least the GS-06 level in the Federal system that includes knowledge of and skill in applying, a standardized body of rules, procedures, and operations such as: general physiology, major anatomical systems, and related disease processes, medical terminology that covers the full range of general medical, surgical, pharmaceutical and hospital terms and abbreviations, as well as medical abstracts.
GS-08: One (1) year of specialized experience to at least the (GS-07) level in the Federal system that includes extensive knowledge of well-established rules, procedures, regulations, principles and operations covering patient medical records, their required contents, establishment and maintenance of special registries, documentation of incidents, and diagnostic coding requirements and procedures.
GS-09: One (1) year of specialized experience to at least the (GS-08) level in the Federal system that includes advising and providing counsel to employees regarding policies, procedures, and directives of management; reviewing and determining subsequent action to correct medical records that contain discrepancies and deficiencies; overseeing the accurate and complete retrieval of records and medical data to meet internal and external auditors? requirements; and evaluating diagnoses and procedures identified by the professional staff to ensure compliance with the Diagnostic Related Group management program.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1.Knowledge of and well established medical record procedures and regulations to include administration, filing, researching, handling, securing and completing sufficient to provide properly filed and completed patient records.
2.Knowledge of medical terminology; the structure and physiology of major anatomical systems and the major diseases of each to code and maintain medical records.
3.Knowledge of general office administrative and clerical procedures to perform receptionist duties, answer telephone, distribute mail, maintain office files/forms, and order supplies; and correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and format to accurately prepare and edit written documents and reports. Knowledge of basic office automation software to perform functions such as standardized word processing and receipt or transmission of electronic mail.
4.Skill in gathering required data and preparing related reports.
5.Ability to analyze medical records, apply appropriate codes, and determine medical and legal sufficiency of the record.
6.Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
7.Skill in typing; a qualified typist is required.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
