We have an opening for a PRN Medical Office Receptionist to work at our Employer Health Center located in San Antonio, TX!

Schedule: Full-Time for up to 10 months. 7:30am -4:30pm

Purpose of the Position Provides support with the daily activities of a health center including filing, telephone coverage, appointment scheduling, registration, and patient referrals by performing the following duties.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Organizes and maintains a filing system for patient charts, including generating chart numbers, filing, and pulling charts.

  • Answers telephone and either responds to inquiry, directs caller to appropriate personnel, or initiates a triage slip for response by medical personnel.

  • Schedules appointments and enters appointment date and time into computerized scheduler.

  • Conducts reminder calls to all patients.

  • Greets and directs patients, salespeople, and visitors.

  • Registers patients by verifying that patient's record is up to date and accurate. Makes appropriate changes in computer system and on patient's chart.

  • Coordinates referrals for patients through insurance and other physician offices or specialists.

  • Prepares all billings in computerized system for processing by finance.

  • Collects payment from patients and reconciles daily cash reports.

  • Looks for ways to improve and promote quality; demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness.

  • Ability to identify and solve problems in a timely manner; gathering and analyzing information skillfully, developing alternate solutions.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills; listening skills are essential while remaining open to other ideas and trying new things.

  • Conducts self with professionalism and in a tactful manner, treating others with respect and consideration.

  • Follows through on commitments.

  • Strong customer service orientation, responding quickly and appropriately to customer needs, and managing difficult or emotional situations.

  • Demonstrates ability to perform and maintain Annual Competencies.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • This job has no supervisory responsibilities.


  • One year certificate from college or technical school with concentration in front office support for medical settings


  • At least three years experience in an occupational health clinic or ambulatory care clinic or office.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of Internet software, Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.

  • Knowledge of Medical Practice software a plus.

  • Knowledge of medical record filing and coding systems and medical terminology preferred.

This position supports this mission through administrative leadership, coordination of patient care, and oversight of clinical activities. In addition, this position will provide direct patient care within an STVHCS outpatient clinic. Learn more about this agency Responsibilities Physician performs review of cases referred by VA providers to assure quality patient care and effective, efficient utilization of health care services. Physician also reviews a variety of medical services provided in the community and makes determination of whether additional care is warranted and should be authorized by the VA. Physician will use skill and knowledge in utilization management to review secondary authorization requests (SARs) or other requests for additional authorized care and identify inappropriate provider practices and notify PAS Leadership. Physician meets with clinical care coordinators and VA health care team members to discuss referral patterns and methods. Interacts with VA medical staff to discuss the needs of patients and alternative levels of care. Serves as a clinical resource for Office of Community Care staff regarding utilization of community care. Physician will take on clinical process and quality improvement projects and will act as a liaison between the clinical staff, Health Information Management Service (HIMS), and the Health Informatics Office (CHIO) to facilitate accurate and complete documentation and ensure the system is optimized for effective clinician use, effective communication, and patient safety. Reviews CPRS notes and consult templates and recommends changes and improvements. Provider may also work within an STVHCS outpatient clinic, where he/she would be responsible for delivery of outpatient care to patients enrolled in STVHCS. Physicians may be assigned duty as a supervising or collaborating physician for one or more mid-level providers. Physicians are expected to provide clinical oversight and review the care provided by mid-level practitioners.
