This position is located at the Department of Mental Health-Forensics, 7901 Farrow Rd, Columbia, SC 29203.

ONLY MEDICAL NURSE PRACTIONER/ PHYSICIAN ASSOCIATE NEED APPLY

As the Nurse Practitioner, working under the supervision of the Medical Director, Medical Primary Care Chief of Forensic Inpatient Services, the Nurse Practitioner provides direct patient care in the Forensics Program. Assists in the organization and monitoring of the evaluation and treatment of the Forensics Inpatient Hospital consistent with the mission of Forensics. Plans, directs and executes delegated medical care activities for Forensic patients including the prescription of medication, pursuant to approved written protocols developed in collaboration with a physician preceptor

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Collaborates with the supervising Non-Psychiatric Medical Physician and attending Psychiatrists to provide medical treatment to patients in Forensic Inpatient Facility. Assists in the creation of a therapeutic milieu to meet patients' needs. This includes, but is not limited to, the admission history and physical examination, evaluation of new complaints, and coordination of indicated consultations and ancillary evaluations. Those activities are accomplished with required supervisory contact and timely completion of discharge summaries.

  • Medically manages an assigned caseload of patients and devises/coordinates monitoring protocols for labs, imaging and medical problems to improve quality of care.

  • Collaborates with disciplines regarding adequate medical care and appropriate medical referrals. Participates as an active member in Treatment Team meetings and assists in formulating Treatment Plans. Maintains medical records as required by Bryan Psychiatric Hospital Forensic Services and DMH policies.

  • Attends Treatment Team meetings. Participates in the respective meetings for determining appropriateness for green band privileges and for prospective discharges. This position requires understanding of each individual patient/resident's legal status in order to decide how to transport them, whether to approve or disapprove of off-campus trips, and how to properly disposition patients at discharge. Assists with medical abstracts to facilitate patients discharge planning.

  • Complies with all SCDMH and Forensic policies & procedures. Completes all mandatory training annually to include CPR and MAPS.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State Requirement: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing at the master's level or doctoral level acceptable to the Board to include clinical experience.

Agency Requirement: Requires a nursing license and official recognition by the Board as a Nurse Practitioner practicing in the extended role and authorized for prescriptive authority in South Carolina.

Preferred Qualifications

Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.

Additional Comments

The selected candidate must be flexible in regard to work environment and travel. Must be able to work with repetitive unusual patient behaviors, including but not limited to, combative, threatening, acting out and unpredictable violence. Must be able to lift a minimum of fifty (50) lbs., may be required to lift more during times of emergencies.
