Essential Functions: (Detailed tasks, duties and responsibilities)

  • Recognize and resolve questionable orders, patient identification and potential problems with specimen integrity.

  • Greet patients, answer phones, order testing, label samples, and receive samples in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) based on requested testing.

  • Confer with patients to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears, and elicit cooperation.

  • Obtain blood specimens by performing venipunctures, heel sticks, and finger sticks.

  • Instruct patients in a sensitive and understandable way on proper collection methods for urine and fecal samples.

  • Follow established guidelines for missed collections, recollections, and difficult phlebotomies.

  • Process samples using aseptic technique and prepare required paperwork for ACRH testing and reference lab testing.

  • Scan orders into the patient record per established guidelines.


  • Verify specimen identification and appropriateness of sample type/volume for the indicated testing.

  • Verify specimen integrity.

  • Demonstrate proficiency performing CLIA waived, moderately complex, and highly complex testing.

  • Demonstrate proficiency performing immunohematology testing, including ABO/Rh determination, antibody detection, and compatibility testing.

  • Recognize, investigate, and attempt to resolve questionable results, equipment malfunctions, and technical problems.

  • Complete assigned proficiency testing.

  • Complete required training and competency assessment as defined by CLIA.

  • Maintain licensure and complete required continuing education.


  • Recognize and attempt to resolve discrepancies in results or questionable results.

  • Accurately report laboratory testing results in a timely manner.

  • Reconcile and document pending tests.

  • Recognize and document critical and delta results.

  • Prepare and dispense blood products.

  • Obtain and distribute reference lab result reports to the appropriate providers and scan into patient record per established guidelines.

  • Communicate with teammates clearly and directly during hand-offs.


  • Ensure operation of laboratory equipment by calibrating, performing linearity testing, completing required preventive maintenance, troubleshooting malfunctions, and initiating repairs as necessary.

  • Perform and document daily QC procedures, troubleshoot QC problems, perform corrective action as necessary.

  • Perform a document instrumentation maintenance.


  • Serve and protect patients by adhering to professional standards, all established policies and procedures, and applicable federal, state, and/or accrediting requirements.

  • Participate in the orientation and training of other personnel.

  • Maintain/update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading technical publications, and participating in professional societies, as applicable.

  • Provide consultative services related to laboratory practices and testing.

  • Maintain knowledge of theory and methodology for applicable laboratory testing.


  • Keep work area and laboratory areas clean, organized, and free of clutter.

  • Follow all safety rules, including universal precautions.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in all computer-related tasks, including troubleshooting issues and logging service requests, as indicated.

  • Organize and prioritize workload to avoid delays for patients, testing, and/or reporting results.

  • Make reasonable efforts to limit the use and disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI) to the Minimum Necessary in order to perform job.

  • Ensure an adequate level of supplies based on anticipated needs, ensure that work areas are stocked, and maintain records of inventory orders and receipt.

  • Ensure efficient operations by using appropriate supplies with minimal waste and using down time constructively.

  • Evaluate, address, and/or escalate requests for add-on testing, general laboratory information, and billing inquiries as appropriate.

  • Create, review, and revise department documentation.

  • Assist with evaluating, implementing, and validating new instruments, products, and/or services.

  • Recognize and perform needed duties even when not directly assigned.

  • Work any shift as assigned, work overtime as needed.

  • Oversee retention and storage of laboratory and phlebotomy hard-copy documentation.

Minimum Requirements:
(Educational and job experience requirements. Knowledge, skills, abilities)


Required: BS/BA/AS degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or science/health-related field. Must meet CLIA education requirements for high-complexity testing.

Preferred: BS degree in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science.


Required: MT/MLS (ASCP) or equivalent plus continuing education to maintain CM, if applicable. Certification/Licensure in a specialty area will be considered. Must meet CLIA requirements for high-complexity testing.

BLS required within first 30 days of hire

Preferred: MT/MLS (ASCP) or equivalent.


Required: 0-2 years as MT/MLS or equivalent, including phlebotomy.

Preferred: 3 or more years as MT/MLS or equivalent, including phlebotomy.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic mathematics, good laboratory practices, specimen integrity & stability, federal and state requirements for laboratory operations, and applicable accreditation standards.

  • Superior customer service skills.

  • Excellent communication and critical thinking skills.

  • Good computer skills and use of basic office equipment.

  • Excellent documentation skills, highly detailed oriented.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, prioritize work, multi-task, manage time effectively, and accept guidance.

  • Ability to operate laboratory analyzers, microscopes and other laboratory equipment, and to perform a variety of blood collection techniques.

  • Ability to be a team player and maintain cooperative working relationships with all personnel.

  • Ability to remain focused, tactful, and productive in stressful situations.

  • Ability to deal effectively, compassionately, and diplomatically with frustrated patients, families, staff, and providers.

  • Ability to perform all duties in an independent manner with minimal direct supervision.
