Medical Laboratory Technologist I - Special Chemistry/Reference Section Leader

Broughton Hospital is currently recruiting for a Medical Laboratory Technologist I who will serve as the Special Chemistry/Reference Section Leader. This person is responsible of performing and overseeing the performance of routine procedures and preventive maintenance in special chemistry and ensures that the quality assurance and quality control is compliant with laboratory standards and the laboratory manual.

Summary or Brief Description of Work: The Medical Laboratory Technologist has duties and responsibilities of a Special Chemistry Section leader, resource person In Chemistry and reference department duties.

This person is responsible of performing and overseeing the performance of routine procedures and preventive maintenance in special chemistry and ensures that the quality assurance and QC is compliant with laboratory standards and the laboratory manual. Responsibilities also include troubleshooting equipment, writing procedures, ensuring daily, weekly, monthly quality control are within laboratory acceptable limits, interpreting and reporting results and training personnel to comply with regulatory agencies. Operating the Vidas III, Triage meter, and Laboratory Informational system, this position is responsible to provide diagnostic data to clients and physicians at Broughton Hospital and outreach clients of Western N.C.

This position will also be responsible for reviewing reference lab performance: such as logs, turnaround times and maintaining supplies. This position may be asked to perform courier duties if needed. This person will be required to rotate through all other areas of the clinical laboratory, work alone, non-routine shifts, weekends and holidays and be on call. These areas include : Chemistry, Special Chemistry, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring/Toxicology, Immunology/Serology, Hematology, Urinalysis, Microbiology, Molecular Microbiology and Point of Care testing, EKG, Phlebotomy, Reference and general office duties.

The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:00am - 4:00pm, with rotating weekends and holidays. Schedule flexibility is required to meet hospital and training needs.

Experience monitoring laboratory results

Experience working in a clinical laboratory in a health care setting.

Management prefers candidates with the following:

Experience monitoring quality control issues.

Demonstrated experience working with potentially infectious materials and/or the appropriate safety precautions to avoid infections.

ASCP Certification

Bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemistry, or a biological science from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in a medical laboratory; or

Associate's degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in a medical laboratory; or

Completion of a certified Laboratory Assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course and three years of experience in a medical laboratory; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Broughton Hospital operates 382 beds and is one of the three regional psychiatric hospitals with statutory responsibility for operating as part of the Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities (DSOHF).  With the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, we provide help and support to North Carolinians, and their families, experiencing mental illness. Our hospital serves the western thirty-seven (37) counties of North Carolina, as part of the state's system of care and treatment for persons with mental illness.
