The Laboratory is responsible for analyzing human blood or body fluids as ordered by a Medical Professional for the diagnosis and treatment of physical and mental illness.
The position of Medical Laboratory Technician/Medical Laboratory Scientist serves at the CSU Health Network and reports to the Laboratory Manager. The main function of the position is to assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of disease and human illness by collecting, processing and analyzing patient samples and reporting test results in an accurate and efficient manner.
The Medical Laboratory Technician/Medical Laboratory Scientist position reports to the Laboratory Manager, and works a part-time schedule (32 hours per week/ 0.8 full-time equivalency (FTE). This position may be required to work between the hours of 7:30 am 6:00 pm Monday-Friday and will work rotating weekends and/or holidays for a limited number hours, based on volume, where microbiology is performed independently.
The annual salary range of this job announcement reflects the full-time, 12-month annualized salary. The salary for this position will be prorated to the 0.8 FTE.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs laboratory testing in chemistry, hematology, immunology, microbiology and urinalysis as requested by a Medical Professional
Processes and analyzes patient samples including but not limited to blood, urine, synovial fluid, tissue samples, and other bio-hazardous materials for testing and reporting test results in an accurate and efficient manner
Analyzes patient samples, interpreting data, and based on findings, either performs additional testing or recommends additional testing necessary to establish a diagnosis
Operates and maintains complex analyzers and medical equipment used in the laboratory and ensures accurate resulting of each clinical laboratory specimen
Maintains each laboratory bench by inspecting all materials for expiration, noting any inventory needs, checking the quality of all stains and reagents, and determining hazardous or bio-hazard potential, thus keeping in compliance with certification and environmental health and safety regulations
Records procedural deviation due to specimen, analyzer, or testing material in assigned binder and, if necessary, provides a CSU Health Network Occurrence Report for review by the laboratory manager, laboratory director, and the facility compliance coordinator
Utilizes knowledge of multiple computer systems in order to result and process a variety specimen for in-house testing and sample requirements as well as multiple reference laboratory systems for tests performed outside of the CSU Health Network Laboratory
Adapts to diverse communication styles, demonstrates effective listening skills, and maintains strict confidentiality of patient information in compliance with CSU, state, federal and HIPPA requirements
Identifies customer needs through courteous questions and conveys a positive and professional image of the work unit to fellow employees, patients, vendors and clients by using appropriate professional language and terminology
Collaborates and communicates effectively with colleagues
Maintains educational requirements by completing the required twelve (12) continuing education units (CEU) per year or 36 CEU/three (3) years in accordance with the national certification maintenance program through the Board of Certification (BOC), successfully resulting required competencies and proficiency testing in the laboratory

Required Job Qualifications
Proof of certification by a national board of registry (BOR) or board of certification (BOC) to include one or more of the following:
American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP); or
American Medical Technologists (AMT); or
American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB)
Bachelor of Science (BS) from an accredited Medical Laboratory Sciences program (MT/MLS); or
Associates of Applied Sciences (AAS) from an accredited Medical Laboratory Sciences program (MLT); or
50-week medical laboratory training program in the military plus certification
Preferred Job Qualifications
One or more years work experience in microbiology
Experience with clinical/medical laboratory procedures in chemistry, hematology, immunology, and urinalysis
Experience with analyzing policies, programs, and initiatives to make recommendations for quality improvement
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
Active membership in a professional society related to the field of Clinical Laboratory Science
In-depth experience in a technical field requiring interpretive abilities
Working knowledge of electronic health records (EHR/EMR/HIS) and laboratory information systems (LIS)
