Overview

Fairview Health Services is looking for a Medical Laboratory Technician to support the Flexible Workforce. Flex workforce employees regularly travel to multiple clinics to fill open shifts and "regular" travel is defined as the expectation to be available to travel 100% at any time to different location s based on the business needs. The length of the assignment at a location will vary based on need (i.e. 1 day for ill call or an extended period of time), which includes the expectation to travel to more than one clinic during the day at a moment's notice. The nature of travel expectations (100%) and schedule expectations (unpredictable) provide a clear distinction between flex workforce and employees and the expectation for travel (occasionally) and schedules (predictable) for other employees.

The flex position will provide coverage to the southwest region and occasionally to the south and southeast region, including Uptown Clinic, Edina Clinic, Fairview Center for Women-Edina, Eden Prairie Clinic, Savage Clinic, Prior Lake Clinic.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The Medical Laboratory Technician plays an important role in providing quality, proficient and professional laboratory services to diverse populations within an integrated healthcare environment. The Medical Laboratory Technician performs waived, moderate or high complexity testing, correlates data based knowledge of technical and instrumental conditions affecting testing results and performs quality control procedures within established parameters. This position also may be involved in laboratory specimen collection, safe and secure specimen handling, ensuring efficient workflow and may schedules tests and provides results as appropriate. The MLT works independently under general supervision.

  • Follows established guidelines to obtain specimens, perform waived, moderate or high complexity testing and report results.

  • Collect and process biological specimens with appropriate technique following established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)

  • Perform testing analysis and verify assay/analyzer performance according to SOP in an efficient, cost effective manner. Any combination of the following areas may be included: Hematology, Coagulation, Microbiology, Serology, Immunology, Immunohematology, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, Urinalysis, Phlebotomy, EKG.

  • Document and communicate lab test results thoroughly and accurately according to SOP.

  • Perform and document maintenance procedures plus maintain adequate supplies.

  • Seeks assistance appropriately for problem or unusual situations.

  • Consistently implement and adhere to the laboratory customer service standards. The standards include maintaining confidentiality, promoting teamwork, successful communication and conflict resolution. This may include:

  • scheduling tests/procedures according to SOPs

  • verifying patient demographic and billing insurance information for lab only employees

  • Explaining test procedures when applicable to patients in a manner geared to gain their confidence and cooperation and relieve anxiety about the test.

  • Supports and adheres to laboratory SOPs, quality assurance, performance improvement and compliance programs recognizing trends and identifying when additional reporting, communication or other action is appropriate. Demonstrates competency and compliance with all regulatory agency policies.

  • Partners with patient care giver in care/decision making.

  • Communicates in a respective manner.

  • Ensures a safe, secure environment.

  • Individualizes plan of care to meet patient needs.

  • Modifies clinical interventions based on population served.

  • Provides patient education based on as assessment of learning needs of patient/care giver.

  • Fulfills all organizational requirements

  • Completes all required learning relevant to the role

  • Complies with all relevant laws, regulation and policies

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree in a lab science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution. Qualified to work in a highly complex laboratory as mandated in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 (CLIA)
  • Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) approved laboratory certification such as ASCP or AMT. If not certified at time of hire, must obtain certification within 12 months.
  • BLS certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1 year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician in an ambulatory or acute healthcare environment

This full time role will primarily work at our Whittier Clinic (may occasionally rotate locations) on evenings. Monday to Thursday schedule will be 10:30 AM to 7:00 PM while Friday schedule will be days (start time will fall somewhere between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM). Under direct supervision, performs and evaluates clinical laboratory tests following established procedures and provides quality and competent patient and family centered services that meet HCMC and departmental standards RESPONSIBILITIES * Follows all laboratory established procedures and processes, including but not limited to: patient/specimen identification, specimen collection and/or processing, diagnostic testing, proficiency testing, recognition and communication of unusual and/or critical result values * Performs accurate documentation in the laboratory information system and/or on patient result logs. * Performs and monitors quality control processes according to standard operating procedures. * Performs calibration, maintenance, and performance checks on instrumentation according to standard operating procedures * Performs troubleshooting processes for instrumentation, reagents, and/or patient samples as they occur. * Assists in training/teaching of new team members and/or student interns * Assists with inventory maintenance * Core Lab: Competent in four work stations QUALIFICATIONS * Associate of Arts or Associates of Science degree AND/OR * Completion of a Laboratory Technician training program approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) OR * An approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
