Providence is calling a Medical Laboratory Technician (Laboratory, Variable Shift, 1.0 FTE) to Providence Kodiak Medical Center in Kodiak, Alaska. In this position you will:

  • Perform high complexity tests that are authorized by the Lab Supervisor/Director and require a degree of skill commensurate with the incumbents' education, training, experience, and technical abilities

  • The Laboratory Testing Personnel that perform high complexity testing must:

  • Follow the Laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results

  • Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency-testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens

  • Adhere to the laboratory's total quality management (TQM) policies, document all TQM activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed

  • Follow the Laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the Laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance

  • Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance of reporting of test results and take corrective action/or notify a senior technologist or the Laboratory Manager

  • Document all corrective actions taken when instruments deviate from the Laboratory's established performance specifications

  • Consult with a Medical Technologist, as necessary, if any of the above occur

  • Conduct laboratory diagnostic tests accurately

  • Report results to the medical record in a timely manner

  • Extreme values (critical values) are reported directly to physicians or other medical personnel as appropriate

  • Communicate with and consults, as necessary, with a Medical Technologist if inaccuracies are noted

  • Complete and documents quality control procedures. Communicates with and consults, as necessary, with a Medical Technologist if a procedure shows inaccuracy to remedy the problem

  • Handle all biological materials safely by following standard precautions

  • Obtain specimens in a safe manner taking all precautions deemed necessary by the Laboratory Manager and the various regulatory agencies

  • Assure that accurate patient charges are generated by the department

  • Communicate with and consults, as necessary, with a Medical Technologist if inaccuracies are noted

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Completion of education equivalent to national certification as Medical Laboratory Technician from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, MLT (ASCP)
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (ASCP)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or the ability to obtain certification within 90 days of date of hire

Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center (PKIMC) provides comprehensive health care to residents and visitors of Kodiak Island. This critical access hospital features 25 acute care beds, including four birthing suites, one OB triage room, and two ICU beds. In addition, the Elder House, PKIMC's long term care facility, has 22 beds.

PKIMC provides an extensive array of inpatient and outpatient services, including emergency department, surgery, laboratory services, maternity, general medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, sleep studies, specialty clinics, diagnostic imaging services and pharmacy and is staffed by a mix of primary care physicians, surgeons and specialists who provide family practice, internal medicine, obstetrics, radiology and general practice.
