Job Summary

The University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System (UI Health), Pathology Laboratories is seeking to hire a Medical Laboratory Technician

  • III. This position will provide client services support for Outreach Testing and provide specimen-related information.

The Medical Laboratory Technician III supervises subordinate personnel, for example, Customer Service Specialists.

Duties:

Key Responsibilities/Duties

  • Take a lead in resolving customer service complaints referred by lower level staff and communicates with clients by providing assistance on out-of-the ordinary matters or with complex situations.

  • Answer questions escalated requiring the application of regulations and procedures to specific problems or transactions.

  • Supervise the daily activities of lower-level customer service staff.

  • Review documents to determine adequacy or acceptability of information needed.

  • Monitor daily client service functions for Outreach Testing services which include TAT, printer/fax reporting queue, add-on requests and all other incoming client requests and forwarding those that require immediate attention to the Assistant Director of Clinical Operations.

  • Respond verbally or in writing to complex inquiries from clients to provide or clarify information regarding services, policies and procedures in a timely manner.

  • Communicate with and inform clients of new procedures and services via Lab Alerts for Outreach to enhance existing client services and to institute new client services due to operational and volume changes.

  • As directed, participate in the formulation and implementation of policies and procedures.

  • Ensure timely reporting of statistics, critical values and other client/physician requests and complete appropriate documentation for each task.

  • Comply with up-to-date technologic advances or up-dates to HIPAA or Privacy regulations, compliance laws, University policies and rules, departmental policies and rules and industry changes to promote superior customer service.

  • Monitor call center volume and client time on hold. Provide feedback to the Assistant Director of Clinical Support regarding response time, appropriateness of action taken and follow-up regarding client satisfaction.

  • Assist with the development of call center schedules to provide maximum coverage for call volume and peak hours.

  • Ensure a smooth workflow by integrating immediate needs with the daily service routine. As needed, coordinate functions with other Outreach Testing staff.

  • Assist with the building of New Clients in all Outreach Laboratory Systems. This will include but is not limited to the building of New Clients in 4Medica and Pathnet.

  • Generate reports regarding changes to individual client service, equipment placement and supply inventory.

  • Provide client feedback to the Assistant Director of Clinical Support regarding requested changes to individual client service.

  • Report Quality Assurance/Quality Control according to departmental and laboratory guidelines. Prepare daily, monthly and quarterly reports as designated by the Reference Laboratory Coordinator. As delegated, attend and present reports at weekly Quality Indicator meetings.

  • Initiate requests to maintain and dispense supplies and equipment by completing supply request forms and sending to supply department.

  • Enforce security regulations for departmental files, supplies and equipment.

  • Interpret and defend customer service policies.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications Required

  1. (a) possession of the qualifications required for the Medical Laboratory Technician I and

one year of medical laboratory experience at a level comparable to the Medical

Laboratory Technician II

or

(b) associate degree from a medical laboratory technician program and one year of

medical laboratory experience at a level comparable to the Medical Laboratory

Technician II

or

(c) baccalaureate degree in biology, microbiology, chemistry, physiology, biochemical

engineering, blood bank, or closely related fields
