Schedule:

This is a full time (40 hr/wk), third shift position with hours Monday-Friday 12:00am-8:30am and every Saturday 11:00pm7:30am (Day off during the week for working Saturdays). Reliable and dependable attendance is an essential function of the position. Adherence to attendance-related policies and expectations is critical to this position.

What can you expect?

You will be using automated analyzers, microscopes and other laboratory diagnostic tools to perform analyses and tests that diagnose animal illnesses, injuries and diseases in support of veterinarian animal treatment. You will be responsible for setting up and running lab tests, and reading and releasing results according to SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures). You can expect to specialize in one or more of the following areas:

Hematology

Testing cell-related components of blood samples to enumerate and identify their cellular components, including the microscopic evaluation of blood smears and the use of automated and manual counting techniques.

Urinalysis

Analysis and evaluation of chemical and microscopic components of urine samples, using automated instrumentation and manual techniques.

Chemistry/Endocrinology

Testing blood and body fluids for various analytes, utilizing automated instrumentation.

Immunology/Serology

Testing blood and other samples for the presence of viral and bacterial disease by detecting antibodies (AB) or antigens (AG).

What do you need to succeed?

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required, 2, 3 or 4 year degree in Science-related field preferred.

  • Certification as a Veterinary Technician (RVT, LVT, CVT- Registered, Licensed or Certified through American Veterinary Medical Association accredited program-AVMA) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) (American Society of Clinical Pathology-ASCP), or military equivalent a plus.

Experience:

  • Typically 0-1+ years' experience.


Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Laboratory skills, with experience setting up, running and reading lab tests and operating lab instruments.

  • General science background, including hematology/chemistry helpful.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Organized with ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Positive, can-do attitude.

  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) as appropriate.

  • Supervisory skills, if a lead position.

  • Personal computer skills, including strong typing ability and proficient use of Microsoft Office.

Physical Demands:

  • Extensive sitting, phone and computer use.

  • Capable of standing continuously for up to 2 hours.

  • Extend and reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers.

  • Occasionally required to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel or crouch.

  • May be required to lift, move and carry up to 50 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Hearing acuity sufficient to effectively communicate with customers and Employees via telephone and in person.

  • Ability to communicate verbally on phone and in person.

  • Fluency in the English language.

  • Extended hours may be required.

  • Some travel required.

Work Environment:

  • Laboratory environment with potential biohazards present.

  • Potential for exposure to agents known to cause zoonotic disease in humans and use of potentially hazardous chemicals as defined by the National Hazard Communication Standards. A complete list of such chemicals is available from department supervision.

  • Reliable and dependable attendance is an essential function of the position. Adherence to attendance-related policies and expectations is critical to this position.

SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Site Physician(s) and Practice Manager, serves as a primary assistant to physicians and nurses. May also be directed by employees in a charge or lead role. Practices high quality medical care in performing a variety of patient care activities such as preparation for appointments, minor exams and procedures, laboratory and maintenance controls, patient documentation, and various office duties. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Depending on Practice Site Requirements, an incumbent in this position may not perform all the key responsibilities listed below. However, it is expected that at least 80% of the responsibilities are performed for this job. Travel to other sites may be required. Patient and Appointment Preparation: Prepares examination rooms for patient visits, including cleaning, sterilizing, stocking supplies. Escorts patients to exam rooms and assists in obtaining pertinent information, which may include obtaining vital signs, weight, height, health history, chief complaint and symptoms. Maintains optimum patient flow by keeping exam rooms occupied with patients for office visits. Performs Exams/Procedures: Upon request, assists the Provider (physician, PA, NP) with examinations and minor office surgeries. May assist with instrument handling and exam/procedure preparation. May collect lab specimens (blood draws, urine, saliva) and perform on-site lab testing including collecting samples for slides centrifuge and/or cultures. Performs various tests: EKG; blood glucose testing; hemocults; urine pregnancy tests; pulmonary function testing; spirometry; and vision testing. Changes dressings, applies bandages, casts, and performs other first aid procedures. Carries out CPR in patient emergent situations. Quality Control Procedures: Conducts appropriate laboratory and sterilization controls and maintains appropriate documentation. Performs autoclaving duties upon completion of sterilization certification education. Disposes of biohazardous wastes according to OSHA standards. Cleans, disinfects and/or sterilizes instruments and equipment following safety and OSHA standards. Performs routine maintenance on medical equipment. Maintains departmental logs assuring adherence to DMG Safety/OSHA and blood borne pathogen policies and procedures. Patient Documentation: Utilizes appropriate Hyperspace computer functions and interaction with clinic staff and physicians to facilitate patient flow. Documents patient information into their chart, including current medications, reasons for the visit, and patient vitals. Assures that lab, x-ray, and other test results are placed correctly in the patient chart. Prepares charts as per department guidelines. Completes all necessary ancillary service requisition slips. Familiarizes self with necessary department paperwork and is able to identify and complete it. Based on need and direction, provides patients with written department visit policies, HIPAA Rights, medical literature, etc. Assists in Coverage: While performing patient care duties, the MA will not exercise independent medical decision making or perform evaluation/assessment activities. Assists nurse with pharmacy callbacks after demonstrating an understanding of medications. Performs patient callbacks as explicitly instructed by Provider or Nurse. Returns pharmacy faxes to pharmacies after physician approves refills. Provides office coverage during vacations, absences, and/or breaks and lunches. Office Duties: Calls for hazardous waste pick-ups as necessary. Answers telephones and takes appropriate messages. Orders supplies to replenish materials used by staff. Other Duties as Assigned: (Depending on Office Specific Requirements) Receptionist: Front desk reception. May perform patient registration and scheduling. Confirm appointments and insurance coverage. Processes mail. KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: * Must be experienced in PC/keyboard skills and Microsoft office applications. * Must possess excellent communication and writing skills. * Must have the ability to plan, organize, and work independently; exhibits problem-solving skills. * Able to develop professional rapport with employees at all levels of the company. * Must be able to perform CPR when necessary. * Practices OSHA safety standards and complies with HIPAA at all times EDUCATION and / or CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE: * High school diploma or GED and completion of accredited Medical or Nursing Assistant Program or equivalent experience or EMT-B. One year training in medical office/recent ambulatory care experience preferred. * CPR certified. Must complete skills verification testing for tasks required for this position. EXPERIENCE: * Preferred one-year experience in a medical setting such as a doctor's office, hospital or long-term nursing facility.
