Minimum Qualifications Candidates must possess a valid New York State license, issued by the New York State Education Department, Office of Professions, as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Technician and be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list for this title.
Transfer Opportunity
Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as a Medical Laboratory Technician 2, possess a valid New York State license, issued by the New York State Education Department, Office of Professions, as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Technician, and be eligible for transfer.
Provisional Opportunity
In the event that there is not a valid eligible list, candidates who meet the promotional qualifications, either under category A or B, may be qualified for a provisional appointment.
A) Candidates must be qualified employees of New York State and have had one year of permanent competitive or non-competitive service as a Medical Laboratory Technician 1, possess a valid New York State license, issued by the New York State Education Department, Office of Professions, as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Technician, and meet one of the following promotional requirements:
Either 1. An associate degree as a medical laboratory technician.
Or 2. Completion of 45 semester credit hours of college coursework and a six-month medical laboratory technology training course.
Or 3. Associate degree in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences and six months of experience in medical laboratory work.
Or 4. Completion of 45 semester credit hours of college coursework including six credits in general chemistry, six credits in inorganic chemistry, 12 credits in biology, and three credits in mathematics and six months of experience in medical laboratory work.
Or 5. High school graduation or the equivalent and completion of a combination of education and experience in an acceptable laboratory. This combination may include completion of a vocational-technical program and two years of medical laboratory experience; completion of a structured medical laboratory technology program and one year of experience; three years of experience; or completion of a military medical laboratory procedures course of 50 weeks' duration; and one year of experience.
OR
B) Candidates must possess a valid New York State license, issued by the New York State Education Department, Office of Professions, as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Technician, meet one of the following open-competitive requirements listed below, AND one additional year of experience performing medical laboratory tests and procedures in an acceptable clinical laboratory.
Either 1. An associate degree as a medical laboratory technician.
Or 2. Completion of 45 semester credit hours of college coursework and a six-month medical laboratory technology training course.
Or 3. Associate degree in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences and six months of experience in medical laboratory work.
Or 4. Completion of 45 semester credit hours of college coursework including six credits in general chemistry, six credits in inorganic chemistry, 12 credits in biology, and three credits in mathematics and six months of experience in medical laboratory work.
Or 5. High school graduation or the equivalent and completion of a combination of education and experience in an acceptable laboratory. This combination may include completion of a vocational-technical program and two years of medical laboratory experience; completion of a structured medical laboratory technology program and one year of experience; three years of experience; or completion of a military medical laboratory procedures course of 50 weeks' duration; and one year of experience.
If you are appointed provisionally, you must take the next scheduled Civil Service examination for this title and your score must be reachable on the resulting eligible list before you can be permanently appointed. If you do not pass the examination or achieve a reachable score, you may not be retained.
Duties Description Under the direct supervision of a Medical Technologist, a Medical Laboratory Technician would perform a variety of routine technical laboratory procedures in the clinical lab or in specimen processing stations. Duties might include but are not limited to pre-analytic preparation of specimens, including computer entry.
Analysis would include routine clinical laboratory chemical, physical and microscopic examinations in the hematology, chemistry, therapeutic drug monitoring, serology or drug-of-abuse screening. Data entry, record-keeping, and scheduled or unscheduled maintenance of laboratory equipment are also required.
