Individuals are expected to perform pre-analytic, analytic and/or post-analytic examinations on human specimens for the purpose of supporting health care providers with information to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patients. Individuals may perform waived, moderate and high complexity testing. Individuals may work in one or more laboratory disciplines (i.e., accession, chemistry, hematology, blood bank, etc.). Individuals may be supervised by the department manager, senior technologist or delegated in-charge individual. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Requirements

  • One of the following:

  • Completion of an NAACLS approved Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Lab Technician equivalent program for an associate degree.

  • An associate degree or completed certificate in a Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Laboratory Technician equivalent program or at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university WITH successful completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course within the last ten years (ASCP) or last five years (AMT).

  • Be enrolled in a NAACLS accredited Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Lab Technician equivalent program for an associate degree from a regionally accredited college/university and be graduating within 60 days of hire.

  • Must have completed certification OR be registry eligible and complete certification within one year of hire through ASCP, AMT or equivalent credential for Medical Laboratory Technician.

  • Maintain ongoing certification.

Job Description and Responsibilities

As a Medical Technologist, you perform pre-analytic, analytic and/or post-analytic examination on human specimens to support healthcare providers with information to aid in the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of patients. You may perform waived, moderate and high complexity testing and work in one or more laboratory disciplines (i.e. accession, chemistry, hematology, blood bank, etc.).

Some of your responsibilities may include:

  • Specimen processing, test performance and reporting test results.

  • Demonstrate through proficiency testing samples that all testing is performed in the same manner as patient specimens.

  • Verify instrument functionality by checking, performing maintenance, calibrating specific lab instruments and troubleshooting as required on assigned analyzers according to the procedure.

  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results. Must correct the problems with proper documentation or immediately notify the supervisor before reporting patient test results.

  • Communicate all critical values and tests to an appropriate healthcare provider.

  • Evaluate and select new testing methods and instrumentation.

  • Assist in laboratory tours and with individuals approved to shadow laboratory department(s).

  • Perform venipuncture blood draws and capillary punctures dependent upon laboratory location and shift.

It is required that all Medical Techs:

  • Follow good laboratory practices with reagent stability and storage.

  • Adhere to the laboratory's chemical and biohazardous safety policies and procedures.

  • Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies and document all quality control activities.

  • Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance if in analytical and post-analytical areas

  • Advocate for self and fellow employees when safety concerns are identified by documenting

Working Requirements

  • Involves considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of light-weight objects (i.e., 20 pounds or less) and assisting with heavier tasks such as assisting lifting and moving patients.

  • Duties may include the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT, up to 70-90 percent of the time.

  • Work may require high levels of mental/visual fatigue

  • Working conditions could include minor straining, fatiguing positions, physical motions, etc.

  • Must be able to operate and perform basic computer programs associated with documentation and record-keeping in the department.

  • Demonstrate initial competency for the proper performance of pre-analytical, analytic, and post-analytical phases of testing dependent upon department assignment. Once competency is demonstrated, direct supervision is not required for specimen processing, test performance or result reporting. Semi-annual competency will be assessed within the first year of hire and annually thereafter.

  • Must demonstrate a degree of independent judgment and critical thinking, consulting with the department leader(s) when appropriate.

  • Must be able to move from task to task, maintaining quality and efficiency.

  • Requires strong verbal skills.

  • Requires courtesy, tact, and good customer service orientation.

  • Adhere to Bronson's mission, values, fundamentals, strategies, vision and minimum working requirements (i.e., TB testing, flu shots, etc.).

  • Work in an environment with some exposure to noxious fumes and unpleasant noises.

  • Work in an environment with the risk of sustaining illness and injury from the use of chemicals and biological materials and organisms.

  • Work irregular hours, including mandatory overtime, holidays, weekends and on-call hours.
