Job Summary:

The Medical Lab Scientist III performs laboratory testing of patient specimens in one or more sections of the laboratory.


  • Performs diagnostic/analytic testing of specimens. Interprets, documents and reports test results.

  • Performs quality control testing, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.

  • Verifies analytic accuracy, precision, sensitivity and references ranges for test methods.

  • Serves as a resource to staff as needed.

  • Meets Medical Lab Scientist II expectations.

  • Participates in activities that result in product standardization and cost savings or cost control. Coordinates daily operation of section/shift including inventory, performance management of equipment and quality control/assurance.

  • Assists lead/manager with regulatory requirements including collating data for inspections and writing procedures/policies per CLSI (NCCLS) standards.

  • Collaborates with department lead or manager to meet identified needs/goals of the departments. Supports the liaison program with developing needs and information for other areas of the healthcare team. Functions as a lead technician in the lead's absence as required.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • May be required to be "on-call."



  • Required Credential(s):

  • One or more of the following:

  • Certified Medical Laboratory Scientist credentialed from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) .


  • Bachelor's Level Degree

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field is required and Two (2) years of laboratory experience at the level of a Medical Laboratory Scientist II is required. May substitute for all of the required experience with one of the following specialty certifications: Specialist in Blood Banking SBB(ASCP), Microbiology SM(ASCP), Hematology SH(ASCP), Chemistry SC(ASCP), Cytotechnology SCT(ASCP), or Lab Safety SLS(ASCP); or Diplomate in Laboratory Management DLM(ASCP).

We would love to talk to you about this fantastic opportunity. POSITION SUMMARY: The Medical Technologist is responsible for competently performing moderate and high complexity testing. Analyzes, reviews, and reports test results and quality control results, and takes remedial action when indicated. Ensures specimen integrity by adhering to the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing. Adheres to departmental policies and procedures including departmental programs, quality control, performance improvement, and safety. ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: * Performs laboratory testing. * Competently performs moderate and high complexity testing. * Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient results. * Operates test systems proficiently. * Troubleshoots test systems and takes appropriate action when indicated. Ensures quality of laboratory services. * Follows established policies and procedures for quality control performance and documentation. * Performs and documents scheduled and unscheduled preventive maintenance. * Identifies problems which may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and takes appropriate action including supervisor notification. * Follows all safety, infection control, and OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen guidelines. * Participates in departmental performance improvement programs. * Participates in the laboratory continuing education program. * Participates in "Total Quality Management" initiative (i.e. Modular Training, Process Improvement Teams, etc.). Utilizes departmental resources in an efficient manner. * Demonstrates efficiency by performing procedures rapidly and determining priority. * Utilizes appropriate supplies with minimal waste. * Operates equipment to maximize efficiency and minimize down time. Promotes customer relations within the organization and in the community. * Communicates with the Laboratory staff and customers to promote quality guest relations. * Maintains and supports a service-oriented relationship with its customers. * Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to customers. * Strives to maintain a positive work environment. * Creates a supportive climate by serving as a role model of guest relations behavior. * Communicates via written, verbal, face-to-face, telephone and computer methods. * Enthusiastically performs miscellaneous duties with completion in a designated time frame. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Required: Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college; graduation from a clinical rotation or internship in an accredited medical technology program or a 50-week military training course or an acceptable equivalent which results in eligibility to take the registry exam in Medical Technology (Clinical Laboratory Science). Preferred: Bachelor's degree in medical technology or clinical laboratory science Three to five years of experience working in an acute care hospital laboratory. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES: Required: Certified as a Medical Technologist by ASCP, NCA, AMT, HEW. (New graduates will be hired and given a 6 month grace period to meet the certification requirement.)
