Job Summary

The Medical Interpreter provides professional services to non-English speaking patients, families and the organization in order to appreciate and assist with the unique language and cultural needs of families as they seek and receive care in the CHOP environment. The Interpreter provides language services including medical and non-medical interpretation during the delivery of services and support to families throughout the entire treatment cycle.

Job Responsibilities

Direct Services are provided by the Interpreter as a member of the Patient Care Services team in order to ensure appropriate language and cultural family centered care as families seek and obtain clinical services throughout their interaction with CHOP.

  • Identifies, assesses and responds to interpretation needs of patients and families as directed by the Manager.

  • Performs language services during the inquiry process with the team for families who are seeking care at CHOP.

  • Provides interpretation services to families during the process of scheduling initial visit and coordination of ongoing treatment.

  • Serves as a medical interpreter for patients and staff clinical encounters by providing accurate, skilled interpretations to facilitate effective communications between clinical staff and Limited English Proficiency patients/families.

  • Relays information accurately and completely between patient, family and caregivers who speak different languages in compliance with hospital policies and procedures, particularly relating to patient confidentiality and informed consent. Adheres to the National Standards of Practice for Interpreters in Health Care of the National Council of Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHI).

  • Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team and provides appropriate language services in the care planning for non-English speaking patients and families. Presents assessment of needs as gathered from the family to assist other professionals in the overall treatment planning.

  • Serves as an interpreter for family meetings during hospital stays as necessary. Works closely with support services (social work, child life, chaplaincy, etc.) in this regard to integrate non English speaking families into existing services.

  • Provides language services during the necessary coordination of including local transportation, lodging and accommodations, food, cultural family requests. Promotes a culture of hospitality

  • and service both internally with CHOP departments and externally to existing and potential international families and clients.

  • Uses "Language of Caring" in interactions to promote family-centered care.

Institutional Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with professional colleagues in the development and implementation of family language service initiatives as directed by the Manager when appropriate.

  • Upon request by supervisor, collaborates with interdisciplinary teams at CHOP in the development of language service policies, practices and programs that improve direct services and contribute to an "ideal culturally responsive patient experience".

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

Medical Interpreter National Certification upon hire or within 12 months of hire date.

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: High School Diploma / GED

Required Experience:

  • At least ten (10) years of interpreting experience in healthcare.

  • Previous experience related to health care, language services for children and/or families.

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree

Preferred Experience: At least two (2) years of International life experience. In particular experience serving an international clientele in a work environment.

Preferred Licenses/certificates/registrations: Medical Interpreter National Certification

  • explains role of the interpreter to patient and provider
  • recognizes the complexity of the clinical encounter and added factor of linguistic barrier
  • sets tone of the patient/provider encounter to manage spatial configuration and flow of communication to preserve accuracy and completeness, and to assess and address potential areas of discomfort for patient (age, gender of interpreter, no previous experience with interpreters)
  • encourages and fosters direct communication between provider and patient
  • maintains professional distance and integrity
  • diffuses conflict between parties by remaining calm and impartial
  • clarifies instructions, follow up steps in a diplomatic, effective manner

Ethical competency:

  • understands and abides by hospital policies on patient confidentiality, informed consent, non-discrimination and by interpreters code of ethics

The purpose of the Director, Global Medical Insights Leads role is to lead a team of Insights Leads, who will be aligned to the GMALs, to uncover asset-specific insights and inform the related medical strategies and tactics. The role will include evolving and maintaining an effective global medical way of working for the generation and utilization of medical insights. The Global Lead for Insights supports the Head of Analytics and Insights to develop an insight and data analytics strategy, as well as manage performance and resources in key areas such as data management and analytics, insight generation and dissemination. This role will provide YOU the opportunity to lead key activities to progress YOUR career, these responsibilities include some of the following: * Accountability for designing, maintaining and evolving an effective global medical way of working for the utilisation of insight from patients, healthcare providers and regulators into early and late development stage by driving the design and implementation of effective ways of working and related operational frameworks for the deployment of insight generation processes and medical digital practices. * Lead a team of Insights Leads, who will have a global scope and will be trusted consultants/advisors and insight discovery experts for the GMALs, bringing together a holistic summary of insights for prioritized assets across markets with a key focus on the top priority LOCs/regions aligned with Global strategy. Manage, mentor and develop the Insights leads whist ensuring that they are resourced and trained adequately. * Champion insight discovery best practices, frameworks, and analytics methods ensuring standard application of these best practices, frameworks, and methodologies across the Insights Leads that they are responsible for. They will also ensure feedback loops back to the LOCs/Regions and other medical functions for alignment. * Partner with the therapeutic areas (TA) Heads to understand analytical needs, prioritize demand, and ensure TA-specific insights strategies projects are delivered on time, on budget and with quality, including alignment in terms of business priorities and distribution of Insights Lead resources across TAs. This role will also partner and collaborate with the Data Science and Analytics team, the Global Lead for Insights Data Strategy & Partnerships, Regional Analytics teams as well as external vendors to align and leverage current and future capabilities and infrastructure.Partner with key stakeholders (including LOC teams, Global Businesses Units, Digital Data and Analytics, R&D, Global Commercial Platforms) to ensure alignment with the medical vision, mission and roadmap on customer insights innovation * Provide specialised scientific, operational and medical governance expertise to drive performance and minimise risks during the design and implementation of the insight generation and utilisation framework across Global, Regional and Local teams. * Support the design, delivery and validation of training for newly embedded insight generation processes and related standards * Develop an understanding of the TAs of focus and the prioritized assets within the TA including knowledge of the assets/products and strategies; Develop knowledge of the priority LOCs/Regions for local environment context when synthesizing insights at a global level. * Enable the partnership with the central analytics team to scope important global questions, develop analysis plans, apply advanced statistical, machine learning, and text analytics methods to translate the unstructured information into actionable insights, and help interpret analytical findings in the context of the TA/asset of focus.
