Duties

Summary

Employee will be assigned to Research Service, Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Center, VA Medical Center, Cleveland, OH, working in collaboration with the Principal Investigator and members of the research team.

Responsibilities

NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed 366 days). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (more than 1 year but not more than 4). Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition (up to the 4-year maximum). The appointment to a Term position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:

Illustrates research graphics used for medical/scientific print and on-line media, grant publications, as well as poster presentations; and applies the latest techniques and understanding of medicine to visually communicate new clinical and scientific information to biomedical engineers, physicians, and lay audiences.
Works with investigators, research staff and other illustrators to refine and improve graphics style.
Follows style guidelines for Cleveland FES Center graphics, suggesting changes and exceptions to guidelines.
In collaboration with the Communications Manager, resolves layout issues related to assigned graphics and troubleshoots assigned graphics.

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position.

To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes: Experience in the actual type of work for which application is made.

Unpaid experience is creditable, provided the work done was of a quality level and demonstrated the ability required for the position.

This includes preparation of graphic presentations of objects, facts, or ideas requiring the use of art media and artistic ability. Appropriate experience may have been gained working as a commercial artist or illustrator in the fields of public information, advertising, or publishing; or by working with technical or scientific equipment, or entomological, biological, medical, or other similar material. This also includes knowledge of biomedical statistics and presentation.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION: Applicants must possess one (1) year of graduate education with a major study in illustrative design, commercial art, fine arts, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, appropriate history or scientific subjects, visual communication, or other fields related to the position to substitute for the one year of experience and meets in full the requirements at the GS-7 level. Some positions may also require subject-matter knowledge of medicine, science, or technical equipment. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) (Transcript Required): (SAA) at the baccalaureate level in the coursework detailed above is fully qualifying. To qualify for SAA, applicants must have completed all the requirements for a bachelor's degree in a curriculum that is qualifying (as described above) for the position to be filled and meet one of the following:

Responsibilities: * Performs ultrasound studies (i.e. obstetrical, GYN, abdominal, retro peritoneal, small parts, pediatric, and vascular). * Consults with referring physician regarding patients' medical history and selection of appropriate procedures and equipment required for proper diagnosis. * Reviews charts, previous reports and requisition prior to the exam. * Educates patients regarding procedures, equipment and exam to ensure understanding and cooperation. * Ensures patients' comfort and safety during and after the exam. * Assists with scheduling of patients and schedules all emergency patients for diagnostic ultrasound procedures. * Monitors all appointments scheduled for ultrasound examinations. * Performs preliminary research on patients when preparations are not provided and determines priority of patients based on the daily schedules. * Acquires, archives, transmits and prints images via PACS. * Completes after hours transmission of images and appropriate paperwork. * Immediately reports any malfunctions to help desk and PACS Administrator. * Processes billing via RIS.
