Primary Purpose:

The Medical Director is responsible for the overall direction and oversight of al medical services provided by Kalihi-Palama Health Center (KPHC) and for championing a service-oriented culture focused on provider and employee engagement, quality, patient safety, fiscal responsibility, patient engagement, and overall patient experience. The Medical Director works in collaboration with the other clinical leadership to implement, coordinate, and improve clinical management initiatives.

The Medical Director is a member of the Executive Team. Under the guidance of the CEO, they lead the clinical vision for KPHC and provide clinical direction in keeping with the mission and vision of KPHC. The Medical Director provides direct patient care as well as makes clinical-related administrative decisions on behalf of KPHC. This position is up to 40% clinical and 60% administration.

While providing direct patient care, this employee is a member of the Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) where each team member plays an integral role in providing patient centered health care.

The salary for this position is $260,000 and up depending on Experience.

Essential Duties:

The Medical Director's duties shall include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Provides clinical leadership for KPHC's medical programs.

  • Provides patient care including medical evaluation, treatment, and consultation services to KPHC patients in accordance with acceptable standards, and within KPHC's scope and practice guidelines.

  • Documents in the electronic medical record within required timeframes.

  • Provides clinical leadership and oversight for medical services delivered by providers in the practice.

  • Supervises and evaluates the performance of all medical staff and others who report to them (either directly or indirectly) including Physicians (MD/Dos) and Nurse Practitioners (APRNs).

  • Available to staff as needed. Responds to emergencies and responds to medical patients' needs.

  • Conducts the orientation training of providers and supports continued development of the medical staff.

  • Works in collaboration with the Director of Clinical Operations to foster and support cross-functional care-teams to ensure that patient care and the medical practice meet safety and risk management standards coupled with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Works collaboratively with the Director of Clinical Operations and other clinical leaders to ensure that clinical operations and the care KPHC provides is safe, effective, efficient, and meet the needs of the population that we serve and supports the professional development of KPHC staff.

  • Plays an active role in recruiting and retaining medical staff.

  • Participates in peer reviews and actively supports activities and practices that foster improvement and engender trust.

  • Participates in shaping overall Policies & Procedures for KPHC and actively supports practicing in alignment with them.

  • Recommends, initiates, and actively participates in implementing clinical programs to meet community health care needs. Provides guidance to Administration in developing new patient care services and techniques in accordance with the 330 Program Requirements and in accordance with scientifically based primary health care standards.

  • Plays a key role in conducting the ongoing evaluation of program effectiveness and appropriateness.

  • Works collaboratively with other clinical leaders to develop the annual Health Care Plan, with outcome based performance measures. Exercises leadership and guidance to the medical/clinical staff in adhering to the Health Care Plan and achieving the clinical measure goals.

  • Provides professional liaison with outside patient care providers and facilities, and with health professions training programs and research projects.

  • Reviews patient records and furnishes professional guidance and assistance to providers.

  • Works collaboratively with the QI/QA team to assure ongoing implementation of an effective quality improvement program that sustains a high level of service quality.

Regular and reliable on-site attendance is required.

Other Duties:

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

  • Observe safety and security procedures; determine appropriate actions beyond guidelines; report potentially unsafe conditions; use equipment and materials properly.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

Education:

  • Board certification as a Family Medicine Physician, Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathy preferred

  • Current unrestricted State of Hawaii license to practice as a physician required

  • Current DEA and NED required

Experience:

  • Five (5) years of practice experience in a Federally Qualified Community Health Center (FQHC), look-a-like, or similar organization, in an urban area with a diverse population preferred not required.

  • Three (3) years of senior management experience in a health care setting preferred not required.

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Outstanding emotional intelligence
