Position Description:

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Assistant Professor- Course Facilitator is responsible for implementing the approved MCW curriculum and clinical experiences for the assigned Clinical course(s) to meet student educational needs. With support from the Regional Assistant Dean for Clinical Learning, the facilitator provides high quality educational activities compliant with LCME and HLC accreditation standards while adhering to state and federal regulations pertaining to education. The Assistant Professor- Course Facilitator provides an innovative and supportive active learning educational environment by providing direction and student support and mentoring.

ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

Areas of responsibility of the Assistant Professor- Course Facilitator include:

Teach medical school students assigned course material, primarily interviewing and clinical skills in their first and second year curricula (Foundations of Clinical Medicine, Bench to Bedside, Foundational Capstone courses):

1.Understand goals and objectives for the course(s)

a) Master, in detail, the material being presented to the students

b) Keep current with patient history, physical examination and assessment skills (normal and abnormal), medical ethics and palliative care

c) Keep current with neurologic, cardiovascular, pulmonary and abdominal physical examination maneuvers

d) Understand challenges and ethical principles associated with unique patient populations including pediatric to geriatrics and various ethnic groups

e) Facilitate small group active learning sessions using multiple modalities as directed by the Assistant Dean

f) Prepare and deliver lectures at the request of the Course Director and Assistant Dean (bi-directionality)

g) Mentor and guide students in acquiring clinical and inter-personal skills and in using the clinical reasoning process

h) Facilitate learning activities designed to teach students about the health care system and prepare students for the USMLE Step 1 Exam and for their clinical clerkships

i) Facilitate standardized patient scenarios, as needed

j) Facilitate Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE) for students

2.Provide advisory and tutoring support to students:

a) Attend committee meetings via distance technology in conjunction with the Milwaukee Campus, as requested by the Assistant Dean of Clinical Learning.

b) Respond as the front line/first contact for questions and/or issues related to educational experience raised by students

c) Triage questions to appropriate faculty on the Regional or Milwaukee campus, when needed

d) Be accessible to students

3.Provide support to Clinical course delivery:

a) Monitor quality and evaluation of distance learning, when utilized and communicate the overall experience to the Media Support Technician

b) Contribute comments on student performance to Course Directors as requested

c) Provide summative and formative feedback to students in written and/or oral formats

4.Work with Assistant Dean of Clinical Learning to implement curriculum content specific to the regional campus, coordinated across academic years. Suggest improvements in curriculum delivery, materials, etc. to Assistant Dean and/or Course Directors for continual improvement.

a) Work with Assistant Dean to use resources responsibly and in accordance with MCW-CW fiscal plan and budget

OTHER DUTIES

  • Willingness to participate in orientation activities and educational conferences

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean, Clinical Learning and Regional Campus Dean

Position Requirements:

MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education: MD, PhD or other terminal degree applicable to course(s) to be taught

Additional Experience: Evidence of academic success through the establishment of a national or regional reputation. Previous experience that includes clinical experience facilitation, teaching, curricular committee work, faculty development and/or assessment and evaluation in graduate, medical, or health care professional educational activities, preferred.
