Job Summary Serves as the initial contact person at the medical practice, principally responsible for all front desk and reception activities. As needed, cross-trained to assist the back office as a Medical Assistant either during normal front office shift or as back up for unplanned or scheduled absences.

Greets patients in a service oriented and professional manner, answers phones, registers patients, collects co-payments, updates demographic and insurance information, and provides patients with follow up appointments and requisitions for tests. Performs clinical duties under the delegation of a physician in an ambulatory setting. Minimum Qualifications Education/Training High school graduation or equivalent; completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred. #Experience Externship experience in a medical office or ambulatory health setting strongly preferred; experience working with electronic medical records preferred. #License/Certification/Registration CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) by American Association of Medical Assistants, or RMA (Registered Medical Assistant) through American Medical Technologists or equivalent within 6 months of hire.

CPR certification. #Knowledge, Skills # Abilities Ability to type 40 words per minute; basic computer skills; excellent verbal /written communication and customer service skills. Clinical competency as verified during the initial 90 day orientation period and annually thereafter. Computer and Electronic Medical Record skills and ability to function in a variable clinical setting.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities Assists physicians with patient preparation for examination and with the examination and education of patients. Assists with maintaining supply inventory. Cleans, stocks, sterilizes equipment, and prepares exam rooms for patients.

Completes all mandatory continuing education as established including OSHA, CPR, infection control, billing, and safety and others as required. Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.

Identifies obvious emergencies and alerts appropriate staff. Maintains the reception desk/waiting area in a neat and orderly fashion. Manages the financial aspects of the front office, including credit card transactions, receipts, cash and checks; logs and reconciles all patient monies in accordance with policy.

Manages the intake of patients into the practice, screens for emergent conditions, registers, verifies insurance and explains patient responsibility to patients; collects copayment prior to care. Manages the patient discharge process which may include issuing discharge paperwork, prescriptions, collecting patient monies; inputs charges into the system. Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate.

Participates in meetings, serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate.

Performs other duties as assigned, including Medical Assistant duties as included on M.A. job description. Schedules follow up visits/referral appointments when appropriate. Sorts and distributes departmental mail and correspondences.

Identifies potential behavioral health needs of patients using appropriate screening tools and notifies provider of findings. Ensures ongoing compliance with regulatory and quality/safety standards by maintaining and auditing temperature logs, ensuring medication supplies are current/ unexpired , checking and maintain emergency equipment and all related tasks. Participates in population management activities including an awareness of the populations they serve and engages the patient in self management support, goal setting, pre-visit planning, and the capturing of information that leads to health care improvement activities. Performs selected patient and laboratory testing consistent with the scope of the practice, including but not limited to pregnancy testing, urinalysis, microbiology (streptococcal testing and cultures), tuberculosis skin testing, electrocardiography, pulmonary function tests, and vision and hearing testing (dependent upon provider and site requirements). Removes sutures/staples after the provider has examined the patient and written the appropriate order.
