General Position Description:

The Medical Assistant is responsible for ensuring the well-being of patients and for providing a positive, supportive environment for patients and other staff while working in conjunction with physicians, advanced practitioners, front office and clinical staff.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Patient Care (75%):

  • Complete provider orders per clinical functions by position. (State applicable)

  • Perform medical intake to include taking and recording vital signs and patient history.

  • Assist patients as needed with walking, transfer, specimen collection, exam preparation, etc.

  • Complete occupational health testing including but not limited to services such as urine drug screens, breathe- alcohol testing, hair testing and physicals.

  • Prioritizes and multi-tasks to optimize patient flow and the patient experience.

  • Ensure the well-being of patients and provides a positive, supportive environment for patients and other staff.

  • Complete patient referrals daily.

  • Assist the provider with calling patients and informing them of normal lab and imaging results reviewed by the provider.

  • Proper, concise and complete EMR documentation and paper based documentation for all assessments and procedures.

  • Comply with and follow policies and procedures as outlined by MedExpress.

  • Maintains HIPAA at all times.

  • Other duties as assigned such as new models of care and new types of procedures, etc.

Learning and Ongoing Education (15%):

  • Obtain and maintain certification to perform DOT UDS, BAT, hair testing and other occupational health services as assigned.

  • Maintain clinical skills and competency for all procedures following policy and procedure guidelines.

  • Maintain technical skills and apply new knowledge to position according to MedExpress policy.

  • Maintain knowledge of Medical Terminology and standards of care.

  • Maintain knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.

  • Read and keep up-to-date on all ME Communications.

  • Complete all assigned training.

Center Readiness and Maintenance (10%):

  • Assist in maintaining all quality control, clinic inspection and machine maintenance on a daily basis and report any and all discrepancies appropriately.

  • Manage inventory of supplies; restock exam/procedure rooms.

  • Comply with requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies (i.e. OSHA, CLIA and Department of Health).

  • Maintain and comply with all MedExpress, Optum and Urgent Care Accreditation site assessment requirements.

  • Maintain clinical supplies and equipment and ensure proper storage of biohazards.

  • Prepare patient rooms, set up instruments and equipment according to protocol.

  • Clean exam/procedure rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control.

  • Clean according to scheduled maintenance program and keep appropriate records.

Working Relationships:

  • Worksite clinical team members including providers and non-providers.

  • Worksite Administrative clinical partners.

Position Requirements


  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

  • 2 years clinical experience in related field preferred but not required.

  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations including OSHA and HIPAA requirements.

  • Knowledge of basic computer software and computerized information systems (EMR) used in clinical management settings.

  • If required by state must maintain current certification from the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) or registration from the American Medical Technologists (AMT) or any other recognized certifying body approved by the Board.

  • Ability to perform venipuncture and lab specimen collections experience preferred.

  • Strong commitment to Customer Service and Excellence in healthcare.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Working Conditions

Worksite-based. Requires working in a clinical setting. The noise level is moderate and there is a potential for exposure to infectious diseases and blood-borne pathogens. Also requires: travel to other Worksites/Centers, the ability to stand and sit for hours at a time (with some bending and stooping), ability to use manual dexterity in relation to clinical requirements and ability to lift 50 lbs.

The Medical Assistant is responsible for performing general medical assistant functions in support of the care and treatment of patients while providing assistance to all clinic staff as needed. This individual may provide front office support as needed in day-to-day operations. The Medical Assistant actively contributes to a shared goal model within and across Equality Health to achieve coordinated high-quality care that is patient and family centered. This full-time position may also provide 'float' coverage between 3 clinic locations within the Metro Phoenix area. Responsibilities: * Prepare for patient visits; obtain and record vital signs, chief complaints and other necessary components of the patients medical health record * Ensure documentation is complete and procedure consent forms are being signed as indicated * Perform or arrange for labs, diagnostic and clinical tests or treatments * Collect and prepare specimens for laboratory testing, e.g., phlebotomy, oral swabs and urine drug screens * Assist with a variety of clinic-based testing and treatments including, but not limited to: vision tests, injections, immunizations, small volume nebulizer (SVN) treatments, ear lavage/irrigations, venipunctures, nail removals, EKGs and allergy tests * Coordinate patient care as it relates to lab results or information received from specialists, insurance authorizations, medical equipment and prescriptions * Ensure medical history, referrals, lab follow-up, phone calls and consultations are carefully and completely documented in the EMR system * Assist clinic providers with patient education; interpret language barriers as needed * Perform tasks for Vaccination for Children (VFC) program; audit protocols and attend regular training to stay abreast of VFC updates * Monitor inventory and expiration dates for medications, injectables, vaccines, immunizations, and equipment * Maintain a clean, functional and properly stocked exam room; clean and disinfect equipment and storage areas * Participate in weekly maintenance duties for the kitchen, break room and other non-clinical areas * Regularly record refrigerator temperature to ensure required vaccination temps * Provide front office support with patient check in/check out, insurance verification, scheduling, financial transactions * Perform clinic opening and closing procedures and ad-hoc duties as assigned * Comply with all rules, regulations and procedures for HIPAA, OSHA, CLIA and any other state, local or federally mandated compliances programs Required Knowledge, Education & Experience: * High school diploma or GED equivalent; Associates degree in a related field of study is preferred * Graduate of a Medical Assistant training program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), or by any accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education * Bilingual; able to read, write, and speak Spanish and English * Receive and maintain DPS Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance card and BLS/CPR certification within 60 days of hire * Demonstrated knowledge of phlebotomy, anatomy, physiology and medical terminology * Superior verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to function in a caring and empathetic manner with patients and their families * Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and web-based technologies Highly Preferred Skills, Abilities & Qualifications: * Experience working in a pain management clinic or specialty * Certified Medical Assistant or Registered Medical Assistant * Experience with Athena software * Experience with autoclaving and sterilization techniques * Able to handle multiple activities or interruptions and work independently in a fast-paced, customer-facing environment * Demonstrated ability and willingness to treat patients with the utmost kindness and consideration in the most trying situations * Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills Physical Requirements: * May be exposed to materials and situations that require safety precautions and equipment such as clothing, shoes, gloves, goggles, and face masks * May be exposed to loud noises, unpleasant odors and bodily fluids which will require protective equipment * Able to sit and use a computer, keyboard and visual display terminal for extended periods of time * Moderate physical effort and ability to lift items weighing up to 20 pounds; some bending, stretching and/or stooping * Able to stand, walk, and assist patients up to 8 hours per day Equality Health Phoenix AZ
