Job Summary As a Medical Assistant (MA) at Urban Pathways, you will play a crucial role in providing medical support and assistance within our wellness clinic and programs, specifically tailored to serving individuals experiencing homelessness and mental illness.

Reporting to the Medical Director, this position involves collaborating with interdisciplinary teams consisting of healthcare and case management professionals to ensure efficient program operations and high-quality client care. The MA will conduct general health care assessments and partner with case management to support the well-being of our clients. The MA will be an active listener and provide high quality customer service and respond by exhibiting cross-cultural awareness with the ability to promote and contribute to an equitable and inclusive anti-racist organizational culture and environment.

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions Program/Facilities Advocates for clients regarding plans for medical and psychiatric care. Assist with intake, medical updates, and document medical data accurately and timely in client database system(s). Perform vital sign measurements, such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and weight. As needed, perform basic laboratory tests and specimen collection for analysis.

Coordinate patient care with program staff, care coordinators, and external providers. Assist in scheduling health care appointments and coordinating follow-up care for clients. Collaborate, and coordinate discharge planning needs and readiness with other members of the healthcare team.

Monitor client behavior, medical and mental health well-being, and medication intake. Assist with monitoring client self-administration of medication and manage crisis situations. Provide client education on wellness, disease prevention, and treatment plans.

Ensure compliance with organizational policies and regulatory agency procedures. Facilitate wellness self-management groups as needed. Regularly auditing the medication room.

Administrative Maintain and submit all necessary documentation and reports accurately and timely. Document client progress and update information in client records as required. Attend meetings, training, supervisory sessions, and continuous quality improvement initiatives as required.

Community Relations Develop and maintain relationships with medical, mental health, community, and public services. Conduct hospital visits as needed. Communication Communicate verbally and in writing in a professional manner at all times.

Facilitate and participate in meetings to report on clients’ progress and discuss care goals. Respond to all communications promptly and effectively Qualifications, Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a Medical Assistant program required. A minimum of one year of work experience preferred, ideally in a community-based organization or a residential setting is beneficial.

Certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) is desirable. Proficiency in basic medical procedures, equipment uses, and client care techniques. Experience working with diverse populations, such as persons experiencing homelessness, mental illness, and/or substance use, is preferred.

Skills & Competencies Strong written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency in Google Suite & Microsoft 365, Electronic Health Record (EHR), and technical online skills. Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and medical ethics.

Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team. Strong assessment, problem-solving, and resourcefulness skills. Proactive person-centered approach and experience in working with diverse communities.

Compassion, empathy, and sensitivity to the unique needs of individuals experiencing homelessness. Fluency in foreign languages is a plus. Licenses & Certifications Valid driver’s license with clean driving record preferred.

Capabilities Required to work a flexible schedule including weekends, holidays, and evenings. All programs require fieldwork, client escorts and use of public transportation. Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, push, pull, lift (up to 25 lbs.). Desire to perform the essential functions of this job.
