Job Summary:

The Medical Assistant Trainer/Floater provides assistance to physicians, mid-level providers, head nurses, and patients. The Medical Assistant Trainer/Floater is responsible for training new medical assistants, ensuring they understand their scope of practice, and floating between departments as needed to provide support. This position also involves performing basic nursing procedures for non-acutely ill patients, maintaining supplies, and ensuring a safe, clean environment.

FLSA Classification: Full Time, Hourly, Non-exempt

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Clinical Functions

  • Responsible for knowing the Medical Assistant scope of practice
  • Prepare charts and obtain consents
  • Receive patients, take and record chief complaints, and prepare patient for examination; record blood pressure, pulse, respirations, pulse oximetry, height and weight
  • Prepare patients for examinations or procedures including positioning, draping, shaving, and disinfecting treatment sites
  • Explain procedures to patients as requested by clinic personnel
  • Collect specimens, take EKGs, and collect blood samples as requested by clinic personnel
  • Assist the physician with examination, treatments, minor surgery, dressing changes, and splinting
  • Assist the provider in the collection of specimens such as pap smears and throat cultures
  • Administer medications orally, topically, vaginally, rectally, subcutaneously, intramuscularly, and intradermally
  • Prepare and replenish supplies in the treatment room and exam rooms
  • Maintain exam rooms in an orderly and constant state of readiness for incoming patients
  • Perform simple laboratory procedures such as blood sugars and urine dips
  • Sterilize instruments and maintain diagnostic and therapeutic equipment
  • Dispose of contaminated, disposable, and outdated items per protocol
  • Perform necessary vision screening and operate the oximeter, audiometer, nebulizer, and spirometer as directed
  • Demonstrate willingness to assist co-workers whenever needed
  • Maintain good working relationships with all clinic personnel
  • Review patient record forms for accuracy and completion
  • Attend all staff meetings and health fairs

Training Functions

  • Develop and Implement Training Programs:

  • Create comprehensive training programs that cover all aspects of the medical assistant role, including clinical procedures, administrative tasks, and patient interaction

  • Ensure training materials are up to date with the latest medical guidelines and protocols

  • Encourage continuous learning and professional development through access to relevant courses and certification

  • Develop and maintain a library of training materials, including manuals, videos, and online resources

  • Conduct Orientation Sessions:

  • Conduct initial orientation sessions for new medical assistants to familiarize them with the clinic's policies, procedures, and culture

  • Provide an overview of the clinic's electronic health record (EHR) system and other essential tools

  • Deliver On-the-Job Training:

  • Pair new medical assistants with experienced staff for hands-on training

  • Demonstrate clinical procedures and supervise new hires as they practice these skills

  • Provide real-time feedback and guidance to ensure proper technique and adherence to protocols

  • Conduct Performance Evaluations:

  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of new medical assistants during their training period

  • Conduct regular check-ins and assessments to track progress and identify areas for improvement

  • Oversee the work of medical assistants during training periods

  • Provide constructive feedback and develop action plans for skill enhancement

  • Support and Mentorship:

  • Act as a mentor and resource for new medical assistants, providing support and answering questions as they transition into their roles

  • Foster a supportive and collaborative learning environment

  • Compliance and Standards:

  • Ensure that all training programs comply with state and federal regulations

  • Promote adherence to the clinic's standards of care and patient safety protocols

  • Floating Functions:

  • Provide support to various departments as needed

Qualifications

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Effective communication with patients and coworkers
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Bilingual in Spanish/English preferred

Education and Experience:

  • Medical assistant certificate
  • Minimum of 5-year work experience as a Medical Assistant
  • Current BLS certification obtained through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Certified Medical Assistant, preferred
