The Florida Department of Health also provides specialized assistance to pregnant women, infants, and children with special health care needs, regulates health care practitioners, and provides medical disability determinations.

Medical Assistant (MA)

This is an entry-level administrative position working in a fast paced, high volume outpatient clinical setting. MAs are responsible for dealing directly with the public, answering questions over the phone, and entering demographic & medical data into a computer database.

Strong communication skills are required, as this position is required to provide program information, answer client questions, and explain policies. This position may also be required to schedule/reschedule appointments, and file client records. Applicant should be detail-oriented and be able to multi-task.

Responsibilities include:

Serving clients directly via phone or face-to-face by answering questions, directing calls to appropriate departments, relaying participant concerns, and instructing on the following: program procedures, policies, hours of operation, and patient rights & responsibilities.

Collecting and entering demographic data and medical histories into computer system. Inputs appropriate comments and notes regarding clients demographic, health or financial status, as necessary.

Lifting, stacking, and organizing boxes, cases, equipment, and other work-related items weighing up to 40 lbs. This includes, but is not limited to, boxes of forms, client records, equipment and programmatic brochures.

Ensuring accurate completion and timely submission of all administrative reports required, including: HMS, People First, travel, and customer surveys.

Provide laboratory administrative services and support. Phlebotomy training is provided for those interested in enhancing their skill set.

Provide pre-and post-test counseling to clients who present for STD services. Prepare client for provider visit including vital signs, and ensuring the exam rooms are clean and stocked as necessary.

Contacting computer system managers to troubleshoot problems and to get local terminals and peripherals repaired and online in a timely manner.

Attending meetings, contacting vendors/providers, traveling to other clinics or offices, and performing other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge and skilled with a personal computer, including but not limited to Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, Power Point). Knowledge and expertise in use of copier, scanner, fax machines. Organization skills an absolute must. Must be an effective communicator.

Minimum Qualifications:

2 years of customer service experience in fast paced environment

2 years of experience in a fast-paced clinic environment, preferably an infectious disease clinic

1 year of experience in data entry

High School Diploma or GED

Other Desirable Qualifications:

Bilingual in English and Spanish

Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Patient Care (75%): * Complete provider orders per clinical functions by position. (State applicable) * Triage patients to include taking and recording vital signs and patient history. * Assist patients as needed with walking, transfer, specimen collection, exam preparation, etc. * Complete occupational health testing including such services as urine drug screens, breath alcohol testing, hair testing and physicals. * Apply the use of logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions and approaches to problems. * Ensure the well-being of patients and for providing a positive, supportive environment for patients and other staff. * Complete patient referrals daily. * Assist the provider with calling patients and informing them of normal lab and imaging results reviewed by the provider. * Proper, concise and complete EMR documentation and paper based documentation for all assessments and procedures. * Comply with and follow policies and procedures as outlined by MedExpress. * Maintains HIPAA at all times. * Other duties as assigned such as new models of care and new types of procedures, etc. Learning and Ongoing Education (15%): * Obtain and maintain certification to perform DOT UDS, BAT, hair testing, and other occupational health servies as assigned. * Maintain clinical skills and competency for all procedures, following policy and procedure guidelines. * Maintain technical skills and apply new knowledge to position according to MedExpress policy. * Maintain knowledge of Medical Terminology and standards of care. * Maintain knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment. * Read and keep up-to-date on all ME Communications. * Complete all assigned training. Position Requirements Qualifications * High School Diploma or equivalent required. * 2 years clinical experience in related field preferred but not required. * Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations including OSHA and HIPAA requirements. * Knowledge of computerized information systems (EMR) used in clinical management settings. * If required by state must maintain current certification from the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) or registration from the American Medical Technologists (AMT), or any other recognized certifying body approved by the Board. * Ability to perform venipuncture and lab specimen collections experience preferred. * Prior experience with employer health services preferred, but not required (ie. urine drug screens, breath alcohol, DOT physicals, etc.) . * Strong commitment to Customer Service and Excellence in healthcare. * Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Working Conditions Center-Based.
