Essential Job Functions:

  • Makes referrals to integrate client to SMA programs and community resources.

  • Assists clients with identifying financial assistance for the clinic, medications and other medical needs.

  • Obtains required documents and signatures, such as, release of information, hospital medical records, and/or other provider records.

  • Schedules client appointments and maintains communication to confirm future appointments.

  • Coordinates daily office activities, such as, greeting clients and checking clients in and out for their appointments.

  • Greets and prepares client for provider, including, monitoring and documenting client symptoms for providers review during clinical exams.

  • Obtains and records vital signs, such as, blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations, height, weight, allergies, current medications, health history, immunizations, and family and social history.

  • Performs general client care by following established standards and procedures, including, drawing and collecting blood samples, taking tissue and fluid samples, preparing and sending specimens to laboratory for analysis, Point of Care testing, EKG's, hearing and vision screening.

  • Preps exam rooms for clinical procedures and assists practitioners with client care.

  • Prepares and administers medications and or immunizations, via oral, injections, topically, rectally and or inhalant.

  • Reports any concerns regarding the health, safety, or well-being of a client to the appropriate team member.

  • Completes required program documentation in a timely manner.

  • Performs general office duties; answers phone, communicates with the public, hospitals, internal and external customers, etc. as required.

  • Keeps exam rooms stocked, clean and orderly.

  • Disposes of medical waste according to protocol.

  • Ensures safety checklists and quality controls are completed as required.

  • Ensures par levels are maintained by follow clinic standard for inventory, and orders supplies to maintain par levels when they fall below the established quantity.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by clinic leadership or as requested by provider.

Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Minimum Education and/or Experience: Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent and one year of related medical assistant experience required. Experience working with adult and pediatric clients in a primary care medical environment preferred. Experience working with clients that may have co-occurring mental health disorders and/or substance use disorders preferred. Certification as a Medical Assistant required.

Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities:

  • Some knowledge of human services and the application of basic client care skills.

  • Ability to handle verbally and/or physically abusive and aggressive clients and utilize aggression control techniques to ensure the safety and well being of the client, other clients, and employees in the unit.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with suicidal, mentally, emotionally, and/or psychologically disturbed clients in person and over the telephone.

  • Ability to defuse potentially dangerous situations, and remain calm in an emergency.

Necessary Special Requirements: Possession of a valid Florida driver's license, acceptable driving record, and proof of personal automobile insurance if required to drive an SMA vehicle and/or use a personal vehicle for SMA business. Complete State of Florida mandatory background screening prior to start of employment. Complete SMA required training during the first six (6) months of employment and updated if required.

Physical: Mobility and ability to bend and reach during an 8-12 hour day. Able to lift minimum 50 pounds. Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to evaluate, intervene, treat, and record client health care needs. Fine motor skills for legible and accurate charting, daily correspondence and presentation, either manually or orally. Work endurance ability to work 8-12 hour shifts with a meal break, as possible. Routine 8-12 hour shifts. Hours and days off may vary. Extra hours may be required. Work assignment locations may vary.
