POSITION SUMMARY

Under medical or nursing supervision, Medical Assistants support providers and nursing staff in the delivery of health care services. Medical Assistants perform related duties as required utilizing the Patient Centered Medical Home model of care.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide assistance in placing patients in rooms to promote clinic flow and efficiency

  • Obtain medical history, history of present illness and/or chief complaint, and perform all screening required such as PHQ, SBIRT, PRAPARE according to current procedures and quality measures

  • Prepare patients for examinations, procedures, and treatments. Obtain vital signs, measure height and weight; perform vision and auditory screening as needed; record all information in Electronic Health Record (EHR)

  • Collect specimens, perform on-site laboratory procedures including providing vaccinations, and maintain current knowledge, including documentation and preparation of specimens

  • Administer medications using the 5 Rights of Medication Administration

  • Inventory, stock, and clean exam rooms

  • Complete medication reconciliation and allergy verification for every patient

  • Adheres to health center safety, infection control, and hazardous waste procedures

  • Makes follow up appointments in eCW as part of patient visit

  • Comply with HIPAA regulations with usage of eCW.

  • Maintain clinic flow by prioritizing patient's needs

  • Assist providers and coworkers with unassigned patient needs

  • Serve on health center committees to improve patient care environment and participate in quality improvement initiatives, when time permits

  • Recognize and respond to emergencies appropriately

  • Appropriately utilize de-escalations and trauma informed care techniques with patients and staff

  • Contact patients by phone to deliver normal lab results

  • Assist with prior authorizations

  • Assist with referrals to other members of the patient care team-including BH, Navigators, CHWS-and with other KC CARE services (such as dental services)

  • Monitor assigned provider schedules daily and contacts patients for last-minute openings in person or telehealth.

  • Assist with scanning and faxing patient medical records

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent

  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program

  • Ability to obtain/maintain Basic Life Support Certification

  • Ability to relate to a broad and diverse spectrum of the community

  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks

  • Ability to understand and present verbal instructions and to exchange verbal information

  • Ability to work in a professional manner

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

  • Active certification such as NRCMA, CCMA, CMA, etc

  • One (1) year of experience as a Medical Assistant in a primary care setting

  • Experience using eClinicalWorks (eCW) Electronic Health Record

Working Conditions

General working conditions are in a healthcare facility. As such, there is a potential exposure to virus, disease, and infection from patients while performing the duties of this job. May experience traumatic situations including psychiatric traumatized and deceased patients. Travel may be expected to community meetings, client homes, or other agencies.

Physical Demands

While performing duties of this job, employees are regularly required to set, walk, and stand; talk and hear; both in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel, or operate standard office or clinical equipment; reach with hands and arms; and occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.

Mental Demands

While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read, analyze, and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve non-routine and complex problems; use math and mathematical reasoning; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or skills; perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks; work under intensive deadlines with frequent interruptions; and interact with others outside of their department.
