Location

Mass General Brigham Community Physicians Orthopedics and Sports Medicine is located at two sites: 231 Sutton Street North Andover, MA and 288 Groveland Street Haverhill, MA. Our team of experts uses the latest technology to care for athletes and non-athlete patients of all ages. We offer a range of services from sports conditioning, physical therapy and injury prevention to surgical and non-surgical treatments.

Role Overview

We are seeking a full time, 40-hour Medical Assistant to support our two orthopedic sites Monday-Friday. Our Medical Assistants play an integral part in the operations of our community-based physician practices. Dedicated to clinical support, the Medical Assistant ensures a smooth patient flow within the practice and assists in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of physician or advanced practitioner. This includes cast/splint application and removal, instruction/ application of all durable medical equipment and crutch training.

Reliable transportation is required to travel to both locations. Travel between the two sites is determined in advance based on needs of the practice.

Responsibilities

  • Escort patients to Intake Rooms to take thorough and proper intake as well as assist in determining need for office visit.

  • Cast application and removal of upper and lower extremities

  • Brace fitting and application

  • Gait training with use of crutches

  • Education on proper hygiene with DME

  • Assisting clinician with fracture reductions and minor post op procedures

  • Documentation of all work to be entered into EMR

  • Take vital signs and weights and determine if radiology is necessary as well as assist in patient flow

  • Clean and restock exam rooms, inventory and order necessary supplies as needed and assist in the maintenance of equipment

  • Answer patient questions via patient portal and return calls with instructions as needed

  • Answer telephone courteously and timely and take accurate messages and transfer appropriate calls to immediate supervisor

  • Attend required meetings, trainings and participation in committees as requested

  • Enhance professional growth and development through in service meetings and education programs

  • Work in alternative departments and sites as requested

  • Perform other duties as assigned, i.e. draw up injections, post-op care, wound care, removal of sutures and/or staples

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Completion of a formal medical assistant training program

  • Experience working as a medical assistant in a community practice setting preferred

  • Must obtain national MA certification within 6 months from date of hire.

  • Experience working with an EMR system required.

  • Experience working on a computer required.

Knowledge:

  • EPIC

  • Thorough knowledge of fractures and surgical procedures requiring casting

  • Excellent customer service skills with ability to communicate clearly and effectively

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Excellent problem-solving skills with multi-tasking ability

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Basic understanding of insurance companies and prior authorizations

  • Critical thinking and problem solving

  • Effective time management

  • Basic ICD-10 codes and medical terminology

  • MS Teams and/or Zoom for meetings
