Job Summary

This position is responsible for preparing the patient for the doctor to examine. The optometric technician position will be responsible for prescreening the patient, performing any special tests.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under the general supervision of optometrist, routes patients through practice

  • Under the general supervision of optometrist, obtains chief complaint

  • Under the direct supervision of optometrist, obtains medical histories self/family

  • Under the general supervision of optometrist, reviews and records medications

  • Under the direct supervision of optometrist, explains, measures, and records color vision and depth

perception

  • Under the direct supervision of optometrist, explains and obtains auto refraction

  • Under the direct supervision of optometrist, obtains and records Visual Acuities, refraction, cover test, and Visual Fields

  • Under the direct supervision of optometrist, identifies and uses exam room equipment

  • Under the general supervision of optometrist, identifies basic anatomy of the eye for proper recording

  • Under the direct supervision of optometrist, performs pinhole acuity and Amsler Grid as determined by standards of care

  • Under the direct supervision of optometrist, administers and records Extra Ocular Movement (EOM's), Near Point Convergence(NPC), Accommodation, and Pupil Testing

  • Under the general supervision of optometrist, explains myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism

  • Under the direct supervision of optometrist, uses lensometer to read single vision lenses, bifocal lenses, trifocal lenses, and progressives

  • Under the direct supervision of optometrist, performs and explains topography, digital imaging, and tonometry

  • Under the general supervision of optometrist, assists the doctor with administering Fluress

  • Under the direct supervision of optometrist, determines and administers dilating drops

  • Under the general supervision of optometrist, scribes for doctor

  • Under the direct supervision of optometrist, documents assessment and plan of patient's care

  • Under the general supervision of optometrist, explains punctual plugs, LASIK, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT), and other procedures to patients

Work Experience

  • 1-3 years of related optometry/vision care experience within a similar office environment

Education

  • High School Diploma/GED Required.
  • AA or BA/BS in related field is desirable.
  • NCLE, ABO, and CPO Certifications preferred

  • Demonstrated success in a retail, office environment addressing a broad spectrum of customer requirements and preferences.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish positive patient rapport and build relationships to establish repeat customer-trends.

  • Strong communication skills (oral and written)

  • Must possess the ability to multi-task and manage priorities in a fast paced, entrepreneurial environment.

  • Ability to be proactive and utilize problem-solving skills to identify and resolve patient issues or concerns.

  • Proficiency in utilization of automated equipment and systems standard to the optometry industry.

  • This position requires the ability to communicate, exchange information, and work in a team-oriented environment. Working Conditions

  • Ability to lift at least 10 lbs.

  • This position is performed in a traditional retail office environment.

  • Minimal to no travel involved in this position.

Minimum Qualifications: Nationally Registered EMT or EMT-Advanced or State of CT certified EMT or EMT-Advanced. 2 years recent equivalent field experience working with advanced life support providers in a high volume emergency medical system. Must have an exceptionally strong work ethic with above average interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to remain calm and take control of situations while establishing treatment and situational priorities. Must maintain at all times: Connecticut EMT or EMT-Advanced certification and BLS/CPR certification. CEVO (or similar emergency vehicle operator's course, ICS 100, 200 and 800. Must maintain a valid driver's license. Preferred certifications included; PHTLS, Hazardous materials PEPP, GEMS. Major Accountabilities: Responds in an ambulance or other designated emergency vehicle (s) to administer basic life support measures in accordance with established protocols and other relevant policies and procedures; provides transportation to patients that have experienced a medical or traumatic emergency to an appropriate receiving medical facility; participates in other forms of emergency medical care as needed; does related work as required.
