Medical Assistant LIMA

The Medical Assistant is a multi-skilled professional who works under the direction of a provider (physician, Certified Nurse Practitioner, Certified Nurse Specialist, Physician Assistant). The Medical Assistant is trained to perform both administrative and clinical skills in the physician practice environment.

Under the direction of the provider, contributes to the completion of a comprehensive assessment and documentation of patient/family needs. Identifies significant changes in patient condition through data collection and reports them to the provider. Understands and adheres to the legal responsibilities and requirements within the medical assistant role.

Under the direction of the provider, participates in planning and implementing care for patients within the scope of Medical Assisting practice. Understands how to troubleshoot issues and escalate problems to provider, direct supervisor, or appropriate internal resource. Demonstrates standards of excellence in care in all interactions, for both internal and external customers.

Maintains necessary certifications as needed including annual required competency skills, utilizing these as resources for patient/family teaching and education under the direction of the provider.

Maintains a safe and supportive environment, by keeping the work area, exam rooms, and equipment in clean, orderly, and safe manner, ensuring availability and proper functioning of supplies and equipment.

Maintains skills for cross training to meet patient care and day to day operational needs, including performs accurate front desk workflows in the physician practice setting, including but not limited to: patient registration, scheduling, phone triage, cash handling, check-in/check-out and performing scribing duties on an as needed basis. This may include travel to other facilities for Mercy Health providers, or adjusting hours to meet patient care needs as directed by the manager.

Must have graduated from a Medical Assisting program or have at least 3 years of direct medical assisting experience in a physician practice or ambulatory setting within the last 5 years. Current MA credential will be considered in lieu of degree.

Credential as a Medical Assistant or must become obtain Medical Assisting credential within 6 months of hire date.

Computer Skills, Verbal and written communication skills.

Electronic Medical Record (EMR) experience preferred

Responsible for general clinical and clerical duties associated with direct and indirect patient care. Reports to the Office Manager, supervisor, physician, and/or R.N. Provides care to pediatric, adult and geriatric patients. Essential Functions: Directs patients to patient care areas and obtains chief complaint and/or reason for visit, vital signs, heights and weight. Maintains patient flow in clinical areas. Performs diagnostic testing (EKG, PFT, minor lab) as ordered. May perform venipuncture. Maintains appropriate records including documentation, review of chart for current information, patient notes, dictation, etc. Assists physician with procedures, treatments, minor surgeries and exams as needed. Provides some basic procedures under the direction of the physician, mid-level provider, or RN. Performs some basic triage functions with referral to appropriate medical professional. May be required to float based on staffing needs. Perform functions of patient services coordinator such as obtaining and verifying patient demographic information, enter data into the computer, obtaining co-pays and entering billing charges into the computer. Maintains inventory and stocks exam rooms. Maintains patient care equipment in good working order to ensure quality control procedures and in accordance with regulatory guidelines. Assists in ensuring compliance with the state, federal and other regulatory agencies. Administers medications and documents. Reviews daily schedule to prepare charts for daily appointments. Follows up on missed appointments. Required Minimum Education: Vocational/Technical Degree Specialty/Major: Medical Assisting Preferred Education: 2 year Associates Degree Specialty/Major: Medical Assisting Licensure/Certifications Required: Must be a graduate of an approved Medical Assistant program. Current certification or licensure required. If not currently certified/registered must obtain within 90 days of employment. Must possess current CPR certification with the American Heart Association. Preferred: Must possess ability to adjust to varying work levels in order to complete multiple tasks based on department's daily needs. Minimum Year's Experience: Two years of previous experience in a physician's office or ambulatory care setting preferred. Working knowledge of Microsoft office or equivalent.
