The Medical Assistant performs both clinical and administrative duties. The Medical Assistant supports patient care by taking medical histories and recording vital signs of patients as well as administrative duties such as requesting and updating patient medical records, filing and preparing correspondence for patients or members of the healthcare team.


  • Greet and escort patient to exam room, gather patient history, measure vital signs and document all information in patient medical chart.

  • Assists physicians in preparing and conducting office procedures.

  • Give instructions to patients as directed by physician, advanced practitioner or nursing staff.

  • Assists with scheduling of tests and treatments.

  • Ensure exam rooms are clean and stocked with adequate medical supplies, maintain instruments and prepare sterilization as required.

  • Screens telephone calls for referrals to nurse or physician.

  • Triage and process messages from patients, front office staff, referring physicians and pharmacies to physicians.

  • Maintains patient files, records and other information.

  • Compiles and condenses technical and statistical data for reports and records as requested.

  • Maintains patient confidentiality.

  • Communicates effectively and courteously with and demonstrates a caring attitude toward patients and family.

  • Treats all patients and their families with dignity and respect.

  • Follows universal precautions, OSHA standards and HIPAA regulations.

  • Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.

  • Performs other assigned duties as directed.


Education Level: Diploma from an accredited program for Medical Assistants required. MA Certification preferred.

Experience Years: 1+ years' experience in office based setting preferred.

Experience Industry: Healthcare

  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

  • Maintain CPR certification.

Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience will be considered.

MR Duties: * Follows all HealthTexas Medical Group policies and procedures to include but not limited to human resources, clinic, administrative, HIPAA and compliance. * Greets patients and visitors. Checks in patients. Verifies and updates necessary information in the medical record and patient registration. Enters patient demographics and insurance information into the computer. Assists patients with physical difficulties. Notifies the medical assistant when a patient is ready. * Maintains appointment schedules. Confirms appointments and obtains referral information. Verifies insurance coverage. * Answers telephone, screens calls and visitors, takes messages, and provides routine information. * Responsible for accurately processing charge tickets as patients exit the clinic. Reviews tickets for accuracy and completeness, determines appropriate fees for services rendered, calculates totals, collects appropriate amount from patients, and properly records information. May be responsible for posting hospital charges or other satellite services. Utilizes correct ICD-9, CPT and HCPCS coding methods to determine the proper code for the services rendered. * May be required to maintain appropriate levels of cash and balance cash drawer per company procedure. * Processes payments received in person and by mail. Records, totals and prepares monies for deposit according to company procedure. * Responsible for cross-checking tickets and correcting all detected errors; notifies supervisor and patient of corrections. Reconciles daily charge tickets within established guidelines. * Refers patients to supervisor for clarification or discussion of account and/or payment terms. * Operation and maintenance of credit and collection equipment and supplies inventory. Maintains appropriate supply inventory. * Maintains patient medical records, reports and other information according to policies and procedures. * Performs other tasks and related work as required. MR Qualifications: * High school diploma or equivalent. * 1-3 year of physician office experience (not including externship), knowledge of ICD-9, CPT and HCPCS coding. * Knowledge of managed care preferred. * Excellent interpersonal, communication and customer service skills, and good math knowledge essential. * Ability to work in a multi-tasking environment. * Spanish speaking skills a plus. Prepares patients for physical exam. Instructs patients in collection of samples and tests. * Oversees appointment bookings and ensures preferences are given to patients in emergency situations. * Maintains timely flow of patients. * Makes arrangements for patient testing and admissions. * Updates patient care plan under direction of medical provider. Orders, prepares, and inspects patient charts.
