Job Description

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and/or Physician, the Medical Assistant performs delegated functions as a member of the patient care team to provide a variety of multi-skilled services. These activities contribute to meeting the health care, safety and comfort needs of patients, and are performed in accordance with all existing regulatory, state and company standards, policies and procedures. Duties to include; room patients, phlebotomy, spirometry, vitals, lab, EMR.

High School graduate or equivalent preferred.

Diploma from an accredited medical assistant program and/or Medical Assistant Certification required (CMA, RMA ).
1 Year of Medical office experience preferred.

Epic Experience preferred.

Must possess effective communication skills. Competency in basic medical assisting skills. Including, rooming patients, assisting provider with exams, performing hearing tests, answering phones, scheduling appointments and surgeries. Strong working knowledge of medical terminology. Strong computer skills including solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office software. Experience with medical software preferred. Positive, customer-focused approach, with commitment to providing excellent patient care. Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong organization skills and attention to detail

Responsibilities include but not limited to direct and indirect patient care activities which are essential in providing high quality and safe patient care consistent with an exceptional patient experience. Responsibilities: 1. Core competency 1.1. Escorts patients to and from exam and /or treatment areas, rest rooms ensuring patient safety by using established organizational policies, procedures and guidelines. 1.2. As part of the Rooming Process: 1) appropriately identifies patient, 2) introduces self to patient/family and explains the role of the MA, 3) escorts patient to exam/procedure room, 4) prepares patients for visit using standardized rooming workflow/protocol which includes monitoring vital signs, height, weight, blood pressure, pulse oximetry. 1.3. The MA collects and documents data as required and is aware of results outside of normal limits. Recognizes abnormal reports and brings abnormal values to the attention of the RN and/or provider. 1.4. Performs screening (i.e. pain, falls, abuse, learning needs); ensures communication of abnormal results to the appropriate personnel. 1.5. Performs point of care testing as ordered and in accordance with established policies including but not limited to EKG, glucose monitoring, urine, blood or stool specimen collection. Recognizes and reports abnormal test results to a licensed clinician. Labels specimens that require processing accurately and sends to appropriate laboratory in a timely manner. 1.6. Assists with various procedures. Prepares room, patient and sets up instruments and equipment according to department protocol. 1.7. Obtains outside patient records as directed, including lab/radiology reports, hospital notes and outside provider information as requested. 1.8. Performs a supportive role with clerical operations as related to patient and clinical service needs, i.e. scanning documents, assisting patients with my chart enrollment, completion of surveys or questionnaires, etc. Per clinical service area routinely checks EPIC in-basket or other tools, i.e. paper workflow and follows up accordingly. 1.9. Obtain pre-authorizations when necessary. 1.10. Follow appropriate infection control; policy related to instrumentation and cleaning of exam rooms/infusion area. Notifies Engineering Department of equipment defects or damage. 1.11. Orders, sorts and stores supplies following established department policy. Restocks exam/procedure rooms and infusion area as required. 1.12. Provides patient centered care with sensitivity and respect for the diversity of human experience and demonstrates caring behaviors toward patient and significant others, while recognizing own values related to the diversity of the human experience, pain management, illness, suffering and end of life care. 1.13. Maintains the integrity, privacy and confidentiality of data and information. 1.14. Performs other duties as assigned. Other information: EDUCATION: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Medical Assistant Certification required. Knowledge of general medical terminology required. BLS required. EXPERIENCE: Preferred 12-18 months experience prior work as a Medical Assistant, Nursing Assistant, or Patient Care Associate, preferably in an outpatient clinical setting or relevant patient care environment. Should have clinical competency; Phlebotomy skills required; computer experience required. LICENSURE: Preferred current medical assisting credential (certifications or registration) acceptable to, and recognized by, the Connecticut/RI Department of Public Health. SPECIAL_SKILLS: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patient, families, peers, and interdisciplinary team. Demonstrate flexibility in adjusting priorities and adjust work plans based on the needs of the patient, the service/unit, and the patient care team. Demonstrates professional, appropriate, effective and tactful written, verbal and nonverbal communication with patients, families, medical staff, colleagues, and all internal and external employees., medical staff, colleagues, and all internal and external employees.
