Overview

ANNUAL SALARY (DEPENDING ON SKILLS/EXPERIENCE): Hourly Rate $23.54 - $28.89

SCOPE: The General Surgery Licensed Vocational Nurse/experienced Medical Assistant is responsible for the coordination and delivery of services to general surgery patients in the clinic setting under the practice manager and the physicians. Provides specialized nursing care, medication administration, physician assistance, information gathering, sample collection, patient education, patient follow-up, supply maintenance and consultation.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide training and education to new medical assistants in various service lines.

  • Provides cross coverage across service lines when staffing needs are deemed necessary. Serve as a resource to other staff in all service lines.

  • Monitor daily clinic flow and assist physicians and Medical Assistants with any bottlenecks or issues. Identify creative solutions to improve patient flow through the clinic.

  • Supports patient centralization team in charge entries, batch balancing, accounts receivable collections, appeals processing, and keeping up to date with payer requirements

  • Communicate all pertinent information and any interventions to Clinical Teams/Physician.

  • Provide care coordination by scheduling complex appointments requiring strong knowledge of procedures, department protocols, and timing. Ensure the patient care team is communicated with on a timely basis and confirm the patient's understanding

  • Confirm all patient work queues and in-basket messages are followed up on without delay.

  • Able to schedule patients and check patients out of the clinic with up-to-date appointments and infusion schedules.

  • Conducts routine inventory and equipment checks within the service line and arranges for specialty equipment and services as needed.

  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Practice Manager

Workup Facilitation:

  • Provide patients with information on how, when, and where to schedule appointments for Bariatric workup.

  • Assist with signing up for the Bariatric Seminar and Support Group.

  • Communicate authorization status for all referrals.

  • Fax all external referrals with authorization to providers and confirm receipt. Notify the patient to schedule with the provider after receiving confirmation from the receiving office.

  • Schedule follow ups and other pertinent appointments for patients

Chart Preparation:

  • Request all consult notes completed and confirm upload to patient charts.

  • Request and confirm upload of all diagnostic exams done (i.e. labs, UGI, Chest X-Ray, etc.).

  • For patients with no weight check requirements, reschedule any pre-scheduled appointments if they have not completed the workup ordered.

  • Update appointments as needed for provider change (i.e. patient completes workup and needs pre-op with surgeon for consent)

  • Document and facilitate Epic Care's No-Show Process/Documentation

Qualifications

LVN:

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.

  • Valid California LVN License required

  • IV/Venipuncture Certification required

  • BLS Certification required

Medical Assistant:

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.

  • Certificate of graduation from an accredited program for Medical Assistants required.

  • At least 2 years of experience as a medical assistant or nursing assistant.

  • Current BCLS certification required within 3 months of hire.

  • Certified Medical Assistant preferred.
