I. Major Responsibilities:

1.Distributes and monitors the flow of work for an assigned group of employees.

2.Provides training and technical assistance to employees within the assigned work area.

3.Assists manager in assuring that assigned employees are provided with appropriate resources, materials, and methods.

4.Provides recommendations to manager for the most efficient utilization of assigned personnel.

5.Provides input to manager on assigned staff for annual performance evaluations.

6.Leads process improvement projects utilizing Lean Yellow Belt concepts.

7.Escorts patients to examination rooms, take and record vital signs such as blood pressures, temperatures, height, weight, etc. Collects and documents patient health status, history, and documents and monitors patient progress following standard procedures.

8.Performs EKG's, phlebotomy, Point of Care (POC) tests according to clinic/office standards.

9.May prepare, document, and administer non-intravenous injections as directed or required by office/clinic, within scope of practice.



  1. Assists in performing routine physical examination or clinical procedures.

  2. Reviews laboratory results and ensures abnormal results are immediately brought to the attention of the physicians and others, as appropriate.

  3. Provides clear, timely communication to the appropriate licensed clinician regarding observations and changes reported in patient per office/clinic guidelines. Sets up/prepares rooms based on patient care requirements. Assists in the setup, maintenance, disassembly, and cleaning of patient equipment.

  4. Ensures instruments and scopes are cleaned, sterilized, and repackaged per office/clinic protocol.

  5. Operates the sterilization/cleaning systems, as necessary.

  6. Assists in moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients as directed following policy standards. Utilize proper safety techniques and body mechanic in all work-related activities.

  7. Follows procedures for arriving patients and scheduling appointments.

  8. Assists with patient admissions, transfers, and discharge procedures.

  9. Maintains assigned office and/or clinical supplies. Assure accurate inventory of supplies based on approved levels.

    Rotate stock as required. Initiate requisitions for re-supply or special items.

  10. Maintains logs, organizes patient care chart, and/or maintains medical records. May enter data or retrieve medical information from the electronic medical record.

  11. Processes prescription and refills as directed per procedure.

  12. Performs a variety of clerical duties per office/clinic protocol such as typing, filing, scheduling appointments, generating letters and form preparation, receiving/returning/directing phone calls per office/clinic protocol, and documenting in patient record as required or directed.

  13. Collaborates with insurers to verify coverage, eligibility and coverage, prior authorizations for procedures, medications, and tests as needed. Follow guidelines established by insurers to ensure that pre-authorization, pre-certification, and clinician referrals for treatment are obtained prior to patient visits.

  14. Collects co-payments from patients for visits and maintain records.

Assists supervisor in assuring that assigned employees are provided with appropriate resources, materials, and methods. Provides recommendations to manager or supervisor for the most efficient utilization of assigned personnel. Relays work instruction from the supervisor.

2. Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.

4. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, and seminars as required or directed.

7. Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.

8. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

Required:

1.High School Diploma or equivalent.

2.Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or Heart Saver (HS) certification from the American Heart Association. If not available upon hire, a BLS/HS must be obtained within 3 months from date of hire. If certification is not obtained within 3 months of hire, the employee may be terminated or employee may apply for another position for which they meet the minimum qualifications.

Medical Assistant credential, approved by the Massachusetts Department of Health (ARMA, NHA, etc.).

3.Must obtain Yellow Belt certification within 1 year from date of hire/transfer.

Experience/Skills:

Required:

1.Previous experience working in a medical physician office or ambulatory care clinic setting in a hospital.

2.Medical terminology and computer skills.

3.Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English in a clear and concise manner.

4.Strong interpersonal relationship building skills to gather information from individuals that create a collaborative work environment.

5.Problem-solving abilities for routine situations and comfort requesting assistance from identified resources when needed.

6.Must be able to remain calm when under stress or in emergency situations.

7.Demonstrates sensitivity and responsiveness to patients' needs by acting as a source of information and approaches all interactions with the intention of building positive rapport and relationships.

Preferred:

1.3 years of medical assistant experience in a medical physician office or ambulatory clinic setting.
