Assists the provider with examinations, treatment and special procedures. Assists providers and other allied health personnel as directed by established policies and procedures.

Essential Functions:

  • Upholds Kaiser Permanente's Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities and applicable state, federal and local laws.

  • Assists physician with therapeutic and diagnostic patient care functions which may require sterile technique, enemas, removal or application of dressings (sterile or non- sterile), application of splints, cleansing, irrigating or prepping a wound or area for procedure.

  • Explains standard self-care procedures as directed by the provider.

  • Provides assistance in the exam room which is not limited to the following:

  • Positioning and draping the patient, assisting with minor surgical procedures by passing instruments in a sterile manner.

  • Assists the provider with therapeutic and diagnostic procedures such as sigmoidoscopy, cystoscopy, biopsy, lumbar puncture, paracentesis, thoracentesis, and other procedures; under the direct supervision of the provider.

  • Completes necessary arrangements/organization of the treatment room prior to performing the procedure.

  • Signing the consent form, set-up of the proper equipment for the procedure, and proper BSI precautions in cleaning and maintaining the instrument(s) used in the procedure.

  • Carries out physician's orders as directed by the provider, and initials all diagnostic test forms, lab slips.

  • Screens incoming calls taking appropriate action, relaying the information to not only the provider but also the answer, when directed by the provider, back to the member.

  • Charts and initials such action in the OMR.

  • Performs a variety of lab tests using the dip-stix method such as urine tests, pregnancy tests, and others as directed.

  • Prepares and delivers instruments for Central Service processing.

  • Utilizes effective communication and interpersonal relationship skills when interacting with other members of the health team or patients.

  • Displays tact and courteous behavior when working with staff and patients.

  • Actively participates in education programs and staff meetings that are scheduled by the department.

  • Maintains a clean work place.

  • Adheres to all Medical Center policies and procedures.

  • Participates and responds, when assigned, to Code Blue emergencies.

  • Promotes, ensures, and improves customer service to internal/external customers by demonstrating skills which are consistent with the organization's philosophy of providing extraordinary customer relations and quality service.

Basic Qualifications:


  • Recent (within the last two (2) years) health career school diploma.
  • 1000 hours of back office experience required (within one (1) year).

License, Certification, Registration

  • BCLS Certification required.

Additional Requirements:

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) Level I required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Typing at least 30 wpm

  • Excellent problem-solving capabilities.

  • Basic computer literacy skills

  • Ability to perform job functions independently.

  • Excellent problem-solving capabilities.

  • Ability to use computer terminal for extended periods of time and wear a telephone headset for the majority of the work shift.


  • Riverside Service Area - the physical work location is in Rancho Cucamonga.

  • Schedule to include all shifts, rotating weekends, holidays and floating within the established seniority section.

  • Department weekend hours of operation are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

  • Will support Provider in-basket and secure messages.

  • Must successfully pass or have passed the bilingual test (within the last 12 months), or be active in the QBS program.

Position Summary: Prepares patients to see physician, facilitates lab tests and other physician orders as needed. Assists the Clinical Director with clinical duties and procedures as directed. Key Responsibilities include: * Greets patients and escorts them from the waiting room to exam rooms; prepares patients for exam or treatment. * Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments prior to patient appointment * Assists physicians in preparing for examinations and minor procedures. * Performs basic nursing procedures including thermal applications, non-sterile soaks and applications of simple dressing, perineal care and urine test. * Obtains and documents patient vital signs in EMR, including temperature, blood pressure, height/weight, respiration and pulse. * Obtains and documents patient's favorite pharmacy, smoking history, allergies, current medication list and/or reconciles the current medication list. * Prior to patient appointment assures all reports and other medical information are current in EMR. * Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for the patient and their families. * Pre-certifies surgical and other procedures, if appropriate. * Answers M.A. phones, takes messages, enters messages in EMR and returns phone calls on same day. * Schedules tests and off site procedures when necessary. * Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization. * Disposes of contaminated items according to OSHA guidelines. * Handles laboratory specimens according to OSHA and CLIA guidelines. * Transmits patient education when appropriate through the use of preprinted education materials, links, etc. * Replenishes supplies, stocks and cleans exam room daily. * Takes medical stock inventory and communicates supply shortage to Clinical Director. * Maintains company code of conduct and patient confidentiality as regulated by HIPPA * Attends annual CPR, OSHA and CLIA training programs as applicable. * Attends all staff meetings. Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration: * High school diploma or equivalent. * Training in specialty specific assisting a plus. * Experience performing lab test and processing lab and diagnostic study orders. * Certified Medical Assistant, current/valid CPR certification. Preferred education, experience and skills: * Experience with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) preferred. * One year experience in primary care clinical assisting preferred.
