GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Under the direct supervision of the Practice Manager, the Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting physicians, and nurses with evaluation, management, and treatment of patients during office visits and other tasks related to the visit. His / her primary roles are to assure efficient patient flow through the office; to maintain neat, clean, and safe patient care areas, and to promote patient satisfaction by interacting with patients in a professional, friendly manner consistent with their needs. This office is located on the NWH campus. The position would support a multispecialty practice including Allergy, Surgery, GI, Cardiology, Endocrine etc. and is crossed trained at the front desk.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Review the daily schedule of patients and facilitate efficient patient flow.

Utilize two appropriate patient identification methods for each patient in compliance with regulations.

Taking and recording of vital signs including pain assessment, flu vaccine, height and weight and appropriately prepare the patient for the physician evaluation.

Updating and entering of medication information into the medical record.

Assist the physician in reporting test results to patients including follow-up.

Transfer telephone calls from patients to appropriate resource for advice or questions.

Coordinate practice activities with physician to ensure appropriate level and quality of services including maintaining supplies and equipment.

Cross trained at the front desk including checking in and checking out patients, scheduling appointments, collecting copays, answering phones and other front desk responsibilities.

Participate in all quality assurance activities of the practice with respect to patient care.

Prepare patient Records/ Charts and retrieve imaging in a proactive way so that all imaging and records are available prior to the start of each clinic day.

Provide basic patient education for allergy avoidance and common allergy/asthma medication.

Performance and recording of epicutaneous inhalant and food skin testing.

Put away clinic stock and maintain stock in exam and treatment rooms.

Maintain a clean, uncluttered atmosphere for patient care. Disinfect and prepare clinic rooms before and after each patient visit and conduct clinic in a hygienic manner in keeping with infection control guidelines.

Maintain storage areas.

Scanning and other cross-over coverage as needed by front office.

Cleaning of instruments as needed following clinic/hospital policy.

Other duties as assigned.

  • Workdays: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday from 8:30am to 5pm at NWH

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Graduate of a Medical Assistant program or Nursing Assistant certification in lieu of the MA certificate

Excellent communication skills.

  • Demonstrated organizational skills and flexibility.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work in a collegial manner with staff from other departments and role group without supervision.
