Overview:

Under the direction of the Nursing Director, the Medical Assistant works in the clinical setting providing direct and indirect service for patients and providers. The medical assistant works with the interdisciplinary health team in providing a wide variety of clinical and technical support functions in the delivery of healthcare in Radiation Oncology.

Medical Assistant: Principle Duties and Responsibilities - Clinical

  • Provides safe, compassionate patient care under the supervision of the Nursing Director

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities as described in the Medical Assistant

position description

  • Facilitates flow of patients from waiting room to examination rooms or offices in a timely manner as close as possible to scheduled appointment times

  • Observes, reports and records vital signs, height and weight, pain level, and allergies as directed by the provider

  • Obtains vital signs, height and weight, pain level and allergies. Documents results in the patient's record (EPIC).

  • Promptly informs the MD, nurse practitioner, or staff nurse of any significant change in vital signs or acute symptoms

  • Conducts a medication review and documents in the patients record (EPIC).

  • Conducts a brief focused assessment of the patient, including interval changes

  • Performs a variety of complex patient treatments and procedures according to standard policies and procedures, these may include but are not limited to:

  • Assists with skull fiducial placement

  • pulse oximetry probe placement and 02 saturation measurement

  • sets up oxygen (portable and wall), Propac monitors, 02 sat monitor and suction

  • Clean ENT scopes using OER-Pro

  • Performs phlebotomy

  • Physically prepares patients for and assists care providers with examinations and therapeutic procedures

  • Assures that specimens obtained from the procedure are appropriately labeled and transported in a timely manner to designated laboratories

  • Instructs and assists patients in collection of specimens

  • Instructs patients and families for selected diagnostic testing

  • Participates in daily operational activities necessary for a safe patient and staff environment. Maintains JACHO standards on the unit

  • Performs monthly unit based environmental rounds with the Nursing Director or unit supervisor.

  • Cares for medical equipment and supplies and monitors sterilization of appropriate equipment.

  • Ensures patient safety

  • Escorts patients from waiting area to and from treatment areas

  • Rounds on patients routinely for to assist with falls prevention

  • Aids patients with toileting (including escorting patients to and from bathroom to prevent patient falls)

  • Assists with patient transfers (i.e. wheelchair to/from bed/stretcher; stretcher to/from bed) and bed positioning

  • Provides nutritional snacks for patients as appropriate

  • Collaborates with Nursing Director to identify and meet learning needs

7.1 Attends educational programs to advance knowledge and skill

7.2 Adheres to the standards of required training

Education:

High School diploma or equivalent; Completion of a Medical Assistant program or equivalent and current certification as a Medical Assistant.

Skills/Ability:

Basic literacy skills required for adequate performance of job responsibilities

Successful completion of phlebotomy training

Computer training, PCIS

CPR certified
