GENERAL OVERVIEW:

Under the direction of the provider and as a member of the health care team, assists in coordinating the examination, treatment and health care planning for patients. Assists with other office functions to support patient care and office operations. Follows all established protocols, policies, procedures and standardized workflows.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Using the team based approach, assists in the coordination of patient care under supervision of the health care provider.

  • Prepares and rooms patients within the clinical practice setting according to standardized work flows. Accurately obtains patient vital signs, documents patient information, patient history, tobacco, and medication screening. May assist in the administration of depression screening tools. Completes annual wellness visit screenings. Reviews, updates and screens medication list in the EHR. Reviews social history with patient and updates record. If applicable, pends/''cues up'' orders for required age appropriate screenings, patient prescriptions, refills, or other orders based on AHN approved protocols.

  • Performs back office testing following approved AHN protocols and policies.

  • Assists providers with examination and procedures.

  • May serve as a scribe with additional training.

  • Provides follow up with patients at designated intervals via patient's preferred method (telephone, electronic, written) in accordance with provider instructions. Notifies patients of test results under the direction of provider in a timely manner.

  • Prepares exam room for patient visit. Ensures adequate inventory of medical supplies. Ensures all patient treatment areas are at all times stocked with the appropriate supplies using established inventory standards.

  • Cleans and sterilizes instruments per established AHN approved policy and manufacturer's guidelines.

  • Accurately performs lab controls and equipment checks as assigned.

  • Administers and accurately documents medications in accordance with policy and safe practice.

  • Documents accurately in the electronic health record (EHR) according to established standards and work flows.

  • Accurately performs clerical office functions and other duties as assigned.

  • May require floating/travel between physician office locations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum

  • High School / GED

  • CPR Certification (BLS Must be through American Heart Association)

  • Newly hired medical assistants who have graduated from a Medical Assistant school within five years of application OR proof of one year of work experience as a clinical MA in the last three years, must complete certification training and/or attempt testing within 30 days of hire and must obtain certification within 120 days of hire. Once achieved, Medical assistants must maintain national certification requirements.

  • Those who have not graduated from a Medical Assistant school within five years of application OR have proof of one year of work experience as a clinical MA in the last three years, will be required to sit for company proctored exam when qualified at 13 months and will have until the end of month 16 of employment to pass the exam. Employee will be allowed up to 3 attempts to pass exam before having to relinquish role and look to be places into another role where certification is not required, should a role exist at that time. Once passing the exam, you will be moved into a Certified Medical Assistant title.

  • Associates Degree

  • 1-3 years' nursing or medical assistant experience

  • Medical Assistant Certification

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Performs all assigned duties in compliance with internal SOPs and external regulations. Brings compliance issues to the attention of management. * Assures quality customer service to all customers. * Maintains good attendance and punctuality per the absence policy. * Assist the nurse and physician registering patients, maintain patient records, answer insurance questions, and prepare patient chart. * Directs patient flow, obtain vital signs, performs Phlebotomy, clean and prepare exam rooms, and assist nurse. * Perform quality control on documents, supplies, and equipment. * Maintain and stock medical equipment/supplies using FIFO (first in first out) principles. * Performs all other duties, at the discretion of management, as assigned. REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge/Education * High School Diploma required. * Basic CPR certification preferred. Licenses/ Certifications None. Experience * Minimum of one year recent work experience in a physician's office or direct patient care clinical setting is preferred. * Experience with EMR is strongly preferred. * MA, EMT, nursing assistant or related experience required. * Phlebotomy experience required. Skills/Abilities * Must possess the skills and abilities to successfully perform all assigned duties and responsibilities. * Must be able to maintain confidentiality. * Demonstrates the ability to problem solve. * Able to recognize problems and report to appropriate supervisory personnel. * Ability to handle routine matters in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures. * Good working knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory processes.
