Job Description

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system at UChicago Medicine as a Medical Assistant, Development Coordinator with our Ambulatory Team. In this role, you will focus on staff development, education, and competency.

In collaboration with Ambulatory Leadership and the Ambulatory Clinical Nurse Educator, the Medical Assistant, Development Coordinator designs, implements, and evaluates multi-media educational offerings to foster professional development and to validate and maintain skill competency in order to improve patient care and clinical/organizational outcomes. The MA Development Coordinator acts as a liaison to accredited Medical Assistant programs to develop and support clinical externship opportunities for students.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assesses the educational needs of medical assistants within area of responsibility.

  • Collects data regarding medical assistant learning needs, at least annually, through the methods of observation, interviewing, focus groups

  • Offers recommendations for the deployment of educational resources to enable achievement of organizational goals.

  • Plans, designs, implements, and evaluates a variety of educational activities based on the needs assessment and organizational initiatives included in the Ambulatory Annual Operating Plan.

  • Collaborates with key staff and leadership to develop a comprehensive annual education plan.

  • Develops educational offerings aligned with the medical center's strategic initiatives, policies, guidelines, and scope of practice.

  • Collaborates with Ambulatory Clinical Nurse Educator to ensure all regulatory compliance competency and educational requirements are met.

  • Designs and continually evaluates core MA competencies that cross the continuum of clinical skills within the MA scope of practice.

  • Designs and implements specialty clinic-based orientation experiences and competencies for MAs.

  • Partners with clinic leadership and physicians/advanced practice providers to develop and provide unique specialty educational offerings.

  • Participates in the design and implementation of a preceptor education program.

  • Designs and implements a professional development program for MAs.

  • Provides internal consultation

  • Provides consultation to employees on individual education and development situations when requested by an employee or leader.

  • Routinely rounds in clinics with staff.

  • Participates on departmental and hospital committees.

  • Actively participates on UCM councils, committees and task forces as needed.

  • Supports MA Advisory Council as a point of escalation and mentorship.

  • Acts as a liaison to accredited Medical Assistant programs outside UCM.

  • Develops and coordinates clinical externship opportunities for MA students

  • Defines and maintains consistent and effective processes for the initial and ongoing evaluation of faculty students, and UCM preceptors used for students' clinical practice experiences.

  • Provides support and resources to clinic leadership and preceptors as needed to prepare them for accepting students for clinical externships.

  • Acts as main contact for faculty/instructors and internal UCM leaders to discuss schedules, evaluations, and coordination of clinical externships.

  • Engages in professional development activities.

  • Participates in seminars, workshops, and/or for credit courses in area of professional interest and work responsibility.

  • Is a current member of a pertinent medical assistant professional organization.

  • Determines own professional development needs through ongoing self-assessment and evaluation of role performance and assumes responsibility for meeting those needs.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree in a Certified Medical Program

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA, CCMA)

  • Current BLS

  • Minimum 3 years' experience in a health care environment for individuals possessing an Associate's degree; 2 years in a health care environment with completion of a Bachelor's degree

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Additional experience in a clinical setting and/or experience in an academic setting

Position Details:

  • Job Type/FTE: Full Time (1.0 FTE)

  • Shift: Days - 8 hour shift

  • Unit/Department: Ambulatory

  • CBA Code: Non-Union

In this role, we anticipate that you will generally work approximately 40 hours per week. We anticipate that you will generally be scheduled to work the first shift, from approximately 8:00am-5:30pm and will not be scheduled for on-call shifts. The days of the week that you are scheduled will vary between Monday-Friday. You will not be scheduled to work on weekends.

Must comply with UCMC's COVID-19 Vaccination requirement as a condition of employment. If you have already received the vaccination, you must provide proof as part of the pre-employment process. This is in addition to your compliance with the Flu Vaccination requirement as well. Medical and religious exemptions will be considered consistent with applicable law. Lastly, a pre-employment physical, drug screening, and background check are also required for all employees prior to hire.
