The Medical Assistant St Thomas Inpatient performs patient care support duties related to environmental, dietary, transportation, and supplies. According to established procedures, collects and performs limited tests. Supports the patient care team by performing multifunctional activities such as direct patient care, under the direction of a Registered Nurse and administrative/clerical support.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Includes the following but are not limited to:
Assists patients with menu completion; reviews for correct choices according to prescribed diet and delivers menu to dietary office. Communicates diet changes and patient discharges/transfers to dietary office
Prepares patient and environment for meal; passes tray and assists patients with meals as patients' needs require; documents intake, I/O, calorie count and vital signs
Collects trays, prepares and delivers nourishments to assigned patients; provides water, ice and all between meal dietary needs to patients; prepares and delivers special or late trays upon request; orders and maintains standard stock foods
Distributes clean linen and collects dirty linen
Collects specimens according to established procedures and per physician order (e.g., blood, urine, stool, sputum, etc.) Performs limited testing of such specimens; logs results, performs minor calculations and gross examinations, logs results
Prepares laboratory requisitions, arranges for transport of specimens to laboratory as appropriate
Performs BGT testing and EKG testing.
Performs a variety of housekeeping duties (i.e., dusts, wipes, polishes, washes, vacuums, spot cleans carpet, changes shower curtain, fill dispensers etc.) throughout areas of assignment to include special cleaning procedures when patient is in room
Performs discharge cleaning, daily remake of beds and other special housekeeping duties as may be required
Observes and reports maintenance defects that need repair, adjustment or replacement. Identifies and schedules the need for heavy cleaning and maintenance
Transports assigned patients throughout all areas of the hospital as directed, to include lifting and assisting patient from bed to wheelchairs and back as may be required
Supports other direct care givers as needed, under the direction of the R.N., by assigning with activities of daily living such as: Ambulation, Bedpans, toileting, positioning, incontinence, transfers to chairs, log roll, mouth care, maintaining patient safety
Supports other team members as needed by answering telephones and performing other administrative/clerical tasks
Assists with patient transfers and discharges, including removal of equipment from patient rooms after discharge
Performs supply acquisition and distribution on-unit as needed
Prioritizes work and makes changes as situation warrant
Consistently promotes customer satisfaction through positive behaviors when interacting with patients, visitors and fellow staff members
Ensures Hourly Patient Rounding is incorporated in to the daily Patient Care routine.
Records patient charges timely and accurately as described in procedural manual
Assists with orientation of new employees as requested
Keeps manager informed on key issues.
Other duties as assigned.
Works well with patients, physicians, vendors, sales reps and other CCOC employees.

Adheres to policies and procedures set forth in CCOC Employee Manual
Adheres to the CCOC attendance policy

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school level coursework in English grammar, composition and basic mathematics
Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant program
BLS required within 3 months of hire
Excellent communication skills required both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate effectively with administrative staff, physicians, employees, as well as external customers.
Ability to work in a team environment by accepting and offering honest and constructive feedback
Must possess excellent communication skills both written and verbal
Must be organized and detail oriented and able to prioritize in a fast paced environment
Must have the dexterity to operate standard office machines (computer, keyboard, mouse, copiers, fax machines, etc.)
Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time
Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 lbs.
