Job Description:

The Office of Marketing & Communications works to advance the university's mission and reputation by communicating key messages to internal and external audiences and showcasing the scholarly and research achievements of students, employees, and alumni. This position is a valuable component of that thriving LSU communications ecosystem.

It contributes to and supports the Office of Marketing & Communications' mission. This position must build relationships with local and statewide media; write and edit press releases, media pitches, and other content; and works to achieve positive media placements to build LSU's reputation. The position is essential personnel who may be asked to serve as a PIO on the LSU EOC.

Job Responsibilities:

35%: Media Outreach: Build relationships with local, state, and student media to facilitate LSU's media coverage and build LSU's reputation locally and statewide; write press releases: craft tailored/strategic media pitches; update and maintain LSU media contact lists; promote and maintain LSU media center. Respond to media queries; assist in writing statements for the media on behalf of the university; promote LSU experts to achieve media placements for LSU.

35%: Collaboration: Work with colleagues in LSU Marketing & Communications to creatively tell LSU's story on all multimedia platforms; find ways to make LSU's academic/research stories newsworthy; and create and share content with the news media.

Work with various communicators across campus to coordinate and strategize all communication efforts, anticipate potential media stories and assist with media queries to those areas of campus. Provide talking points to communicators on campus as needed. Strategize communication efforts for specific audiences, including students, parents, prospective students, alumni, legislators and donors.

30%: Analytics: Gather and prepare analytics for internal reports on all major media stories and events.

Gather and curate all news coverage on LSU each weekday for daily internal media sweep document. Essential Personnel: Assist with media queries during times of crisis or emergencies, to potentially include working in LSU's Emergency Operations Center as needed. Miscellaneous: Other duties as assigned.

Additional Information:

Ability to work extended hours, nights and weekends-including overnight-in the event of a crisis. May be required to work after hours to meet deadlines or to manage time-sensitive issues. According to PS-18, this position is deemed essential and may be required to report to campus in times of closure or emergency.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Mass Communications, English, Digital Media, Political Communications, or related field.

Years of Experience: 1 year (can include student internship or student employment)

Specific Experience: Copy writing and editing experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Mass Communications, English, Digitial Media, Political Communications, or related field.

Years of Experience: 2-3 years (can include student internship or student employment)

Specific Experience: Knowledge of Associated Press style; experience in news media or public relations preferred.
