Department Summary

As the most-used service on campus and an essential component of education and research at the University of North Texas, the Libraries offer access to more than 6 million items (print and digital) along with expert personnel to assist patrons in achieving their academic and scholarly goals. We provide innovative programs and support to enhance the relationship between teaching and learning at the University of North Texas.

The Media Library contains the UNT Libraries' non-print, audiovisual, tabletop games, and video games collections. The Media Library also has The Nest, which is an e-sports and game design space. The mission of the UNT Media Library is to support the instructional and research needs of UNT faculty, staff, and students by collecting, maintaining, and providing access to media materials that represent all academic disciplines and all genres of film.

Position Overview

The Front Desk Supervisor manages all service desk functions and services in the Media Library. Supervises 12-15 student assistants including planning, budgeting, hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating student assistants.

Trains full-time staff on front desk procedures. Develops or suggests policies and procedures that support front desk operations and patron services and documents these policies and procedures through training manuals and workflows. Oversees reserves, supplies, LibAnswers, and the daily functions of the Media Library service desk. Contributes to operational plans and service policies for the Media Library.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and three years' of progressively responsible full-time library experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Expert knowledge of library principles and policies and extensive knowledge of specialized area functions and workflows. Strong supervisory and leadership skills.

Evidence in working effectively with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Verified ability to utilize multiple computer applications toward increased productivity in a rapidly changing environment. Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Demonstrated critical thinking and independent decisionmaking skills.

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:

Experience working in an academic library setting.

At least 3 years of supervisory experience in a library setting.

Library service desk experience (circulation, patron services, etc.)

Experience organizing files, data, and other types of information.

Knowledge of video, games (tabletop and digital), and media equipment.

Demonstrated experience in managing multiple projects while balancing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.

Demonstrated experience in effectively managing detail-oriented projects.

Ability to work independently.

Experience successfully working in a collaborative/team environment.

Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish positive and productive working relationships within the Libraries' and with external partners.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Effective troubleshooting skills.

Willingness to acquire new skills in a rapidly changing environment.

Knowledge of word-processing and spreadsheet software.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

Job Duties:

  • Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates Media Library student employees, including scheduling for service desk and events.

  • Oversees and manages front desk services, including circulation, reserves, and reference and maintains documentation for workflows and procedures.

  • Oversees administrative tasks for the Media Library including managing personnel documentation, ordering and supply requests, shipping, and documentation.

  • Oversees student employee budget, discretionary budget, and related spending accounts.

  • Works collaboratively on library wide initiatives and pursues professional development..
