UL is currently seeking a Mechanical Test Technician for our Melville, NY office. In this role, you will have the opportunity to be hands on and creative in our North America Center of Excellence for plastics, electrical insulation systems, and positioning devices. A successful technician has a basic understanding of hand and power tools, sets up and performs a variety of tests and provides feedback, and enjoys being a part of a team that strives to be the best.
This position will give you the opportunity to see something new every day! You will run various tests on plastics, electrical insulation systems, cable ties, electrical tape, and non-metallic tubing such as:
Freezer/Oven/Humidity/Ultraviolet Light Conditioning
Tensile Strength and Elongation Testing
Electrical Tracking Testing
Dielectric Strength Testing
As a team member, you may be exposed to smoke and fire. You will be trained on how to handle these safely in a controlled environment.
Examines test samples and reads blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, measuring instruments, and operational instructions.
Builds and/or adapts setup and test equipment to new situations, based on data sheets and instructions from engineering department personnel.
Operates designated machines and special laboratory equipment. Performs routine maintenance of designated test equipment and laboratory area.
Receives instructions from and reports data to engineers and other laboratory personnel.
Records observed or calculated data on appropriate UL forms and prepares data sheets and test reports. May plan tests, evaluate test results and report opinions and interpretations, as directed.
Integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.
Performs other duties as directed.
Some University education in a related discipline (AS in Technology/Engineering/Technical/Trade program, etc.) is preferred
Basic knowledge of hand/power tools
General construction experience is a plus
Strong attention to detail
